Chronic pain relief and feeling better

In the interest of full disclosure, I am an unpaid co-author of one brief chapter in this book. I stumbled into TRE� about 7 years ago, and I enjoy using it periodically as a quick and reliable stress management tool to restore balance and positve energy.I have also,with many others, volunteered hundreds of unpaid hours to help TRE become evidenced based in the medical community. My review is about what I learned from the rest of the book that I didn't understand before; I gave it five stars, because I see TRE as a valuable and affordable public health tool. I found the book especially interesting because of TRE's potential to help relieve chronic pain. Most of us have heard the expression "shake it off". We are taught we can shake it off; it is built into our culture. Aside from using will power, there has been little explanation of how one can shake off distress. The book offers insight on how TRE is being used around the world to shake off distress from many issues. It also explains why the TRE tremor/gentle shaking mechanism seems to allow people feel better and safer without a lot of effort.

Better Ways To Spend $21

Noticed another reviewer on Amazon affiliated with TRE's website who is featured in the book without disclosure offered a 5-star review, which seems like a common pattern throughout the book. I've just gotten Shake It Off, and found it frustrating that the exercises are listed at the end of the book after so many lectures from such a volume of TRE cool-aid drinking believers that are convinced this shaking relaxing routine is the answer, without describing the technique until the end. For the cover to claim the book has self-help and stress reducing exercise and lump that critical element in the final chapter seems misleading. A more honest description would say this book is 97% TRE infomercial and 3% usable content, more theory than introduction to a practice of the technique. Exercises with pictures start on page 297. 313 pages total in the book. 296 pages of infomercial and testimonials. 10 pages of actual exercises pictured. A 10 page pamphlet could accomplish the exercise part, and while loving and concerned and caring individuals contributed the majority of the work, so much of the book reads like a resume. At some point you realize this is like reading the comments about an article and question where is the article. It is a very bold move to be listed as the author on the front cover and the writing by the author not be the majority of the book. The 3 page introduction, and 10 page exercises, and 5 short essays may be the only part the author wrote. 5 essays out of 29 written by other people - that's bold. How could an editor allow 296 pages of fluff over how great something is and in the final 10 pages reveal what the exercise stretches actually are?

12 pages are written in Portuguese. Do you speak Portuguese? If you're buying the book in English, that chapter will be a challenge if you are not fluent in Portuguese. The previous 12 pages before the Portuguese chapter, appear to be the English version of the same content, with the same photo of the contributing author. For an English literate audience, why would the editor duplicate material and offer a chapter in Portuguese? What is this like, the instruction booklet to a microwave?

If you're interested in the exercises like I was, you can get more out of the youtube videos online that are free. There are more testimonials written by others than actual text by the author. These testimonials are hypnotic and they do induce the power of suggestion. I guess if you really get into it, and somehow shake, and believe the premise, do the stretches, maybe it works. Does it work on skeptics? Not yet.

The exercises are useful, but for the money, I believe it is overly fair to say I expected A LOT MORE CONTENT SPECIFICALLY ON TECHNIQUE, and LESS TRUST ME IT WORKS REPEATED OVER AND OVER. There is more attention paid to the bibliography than to what exercises to do and how to do them.

Is it a self-help book about helping people in pain? Or, is the majority volume of the book more about targeting people with anxiety problems and pain to sign up for a TRE seminar, and contact one of the contributing TRE therapists? The summation on the final page solicited the reader to please contact Certified TRE Providers if you feel anxious or confused. Who doesn't at some point? That just seems over the top after a 296 page infomercial. I don't think it's fair to charge people to read the commercial.

Delivery of useful information that can be put into self-practice, within the category of a self help book is lacking. There are better yoga books, yoga books with exercises, and meditation, and there are much better resources that focus on you in order to teach you something useful than the priority of this book justifying its own theory. In fact, the majority of the book seems like it is trying to legitimize and promote itself and prove a premise, rather than actually teaching the practice of the relaxation technique.

The exercises are useful, but the writing about how to do the exercises seems lacking given the importance built by such a lengthy 97% of the book introduction to them. For the amount of reading that you do to find them at the end, I was disappointed that so little attention was placed upon what I consider the main point and reason anyone would buy the book.

Descriptions in a book about the exercises needs to be more than a chart on a poster, and the pictures look like inferior photocopies done by someone trying to save on toner and print as a draft. It can be hard to tell what leg is in a front position because they look so flat, like silhouettes. Due to the poor print and flimsy pages, along with lack of more critical editing, I will be more careful about buying books published by "CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform" an Amazon.com company in the future and was shocked to find claim the book was made in the USA. Usually books are printed, even the made term raises suspect. In terms of quality, I had expected to find the book was printed overseas. Perhaps in future editions more criticism will be heard and used to produce a better, more customer-centric self help book with less infomercial, and a lot more deliberate focus upon technique with more contribution and input from the author. In the next self published edition, hire a ruthless editor and do what they say. It's worth it to the reader.

For what is offered, this first version would be better marked for Kindle as an ebook at a price point of a $1.

There are better ways to spend $21.

Finally a masterpiece from a "doer" and not a "talker"

It took only 6 hours to devour the most illuminating book on trauma, shock, and stress ever written. It was masterful for Dr Berceli to seek the wisdom and experience of others to compile a foundational text for both practitioners and the public on how to really treat, heal and master the devastating effects of pain, shock, angst, and trauma. Easy to read, easy to understand and eminently destined to stand as a healing modality for the masters who acknowledge that we have a body that remembers and can release and heal us. I cannot recommend this highly enough. It is an 15 stars easily!
