Scientific Facts + Inspiring Feelings

LIVE HAPPY, TEN PRACTICES TO CHOOSING JOY has two different themes: First, the author presents a lot of scientific research showing the basis for happiness. Secondly, she presents lots of inspiring stories to illustrate the points she's making.

For purposes of this book the author defines happiness to be “The human ability to thrive - to use one skills, traits, and talents in a way that creates lasting meaning and fulfillment.”

Right from the start, the author asks a very probing question—“So how does your happiness come about?” In particular, she wonders how much of happiness is “part of your makeup“ and how much of it can you actually influence.

Ms. Heisz cites a 2005 scientific study which found that 50% of happiness is due to genetics, 10% is due to your environment, and 40% is actually up to the individual. The key point, the author emphasizes, is that “People can choose to take actions that will make them happier.” So in other words, the author is taking aim at that 40% that you can do something about.

The author mentions one surprising finding--at least it was surprising to me. She points out that the chance of making your dreams come true actually is much higher when you're a happy person. Of course, we like to think of it the other way around. We think that if our dreams come true it will make us happy. But the author points out it's exactly the opposite.

The main theme of the book is something Ms. Heisz calls “Ten practices of Happiness.” For each of the 10 practices, she explains the scientific basis for this practice, followed by inspiring stories to encourage you towards that practice. The ten practices are: ATTITUDE, CONNECTION, MEANING, CREATIVITY, GRATITUDE, MINDFULNESS, HEALTH, RESILIENCE, SPIRITUALITY, GIVING BACK.

Perhaps the most poignant chapter is called the “Beauty of Blindness.” The author tells the story of a middle-aged woman, Sabriye Tenberken, and how she coped with going blind from a very early age. Sabrina decided to have a positive, empowering attitude to govern every part of her life, instead of focusing on her difficulties. Sabriye went on to accomplish wonderful things in helping the blind, and even formed the organization “Braille without Borders.” She has been honored with dozens of awards worldwide. You can read her story in My Path Leads to Tibet: The Inspiring Story of the Blind Woman Who Brought Hope to the Children of Tibet. For those interested, you can also read about my daughter's journey with the same disease in her book, Believing is Seeing.

The story of Sabriye has great personal significance for this reviewer, since the cause of Sabriye’s blindness, retinitis pigmentosa, is precisely what is causing my own daughter to go blind. I found it encouraging to see how others cope with this terrible disease.

All in all, I found LIVE HAPPY, TEN PRACTICES TO CHOOSING JOY to be an intriguing, encouraging book, I especially like the portions were the author cites scientific evidence for her ideas. In other words, LIVE HAPPY isn't just a book of random theories and wishful thinking; rather, the author really supports the concepts with good scientific research.

Happiness Takes Practice

I bought this book for a friend who had recently gone through a difficult time. I wanted to get her something more than a collection of kitten photos, and "Ten Practices" was the perfect thing. It doesn't just tell you to buck up and be happy--it gives you tools you can actually use and put into practice on a daily basis to turn your life around. It also gives many moving examples of strong individuals who have done just that. A great book. Not crazy about the cover, however, but you know what they say....

A Valuable Reference for Process Quality Control

I recommend that this very well written text belong to every statistician who works in industry. Others such as mechanical, electrical, chemical, etc., engineers and scientists will also find this book to be a valuable reference. The book covers the breadth of useful statistical methods that industrial practitioners would likely encounter. Some topics such as implementing statistical process control, design of experiments with two or three factors, and troubleshooting with attributes and variables data are discussed extensively. Many real life examples from various industries are used throughout to illustrate the statistical concepts. All topics are well referenced enabling the reader to explore more thoroughly their areas of interest. The book also features a CD-ROM for the PC which contains datasets and solutions to practice exercises. An Excel add-in program is included for Analysis of Means [ANOM] of attributes and variables data the results of which are presented graphically.
The book is divided into three sections: Basics of Interpretation of Data, Statistical Process Control, and Troubleshooting and Process Improvement. The first section reviews many basic statistical concepts familiar to most statisticians. The second describes many facets of SPC some of which, such as Precontrol or Narrow-Limit Gauging in Process Control, the reader including myself may not be conversant, but will find useful in their own line of work. The last section describes what are probably underutilized but often very useful troubleshooting techniques. ANOM, for example, is a powerful way of analyzing data from industrial experiments with two or three factors resulting in graphics that can be used to clearly communicate conclusions to managers, to other engineers and scientists, and/or to operators on the shop floor.
I really enjoyed reading this book and am finding it to be a valuable reference to which I refer again and again.

Great Statistical/Process Engineering Reference

This is a wonderful textbook for the practicing statistician, process engineer, or anyone who works with data on a regular basis. This book finds the right mix of statistical theory and practical applications of the statistical concepts to process troubleshooting. "Process Quality Control: Troubleshooting and Interpretation of Data" will be appropriate for a course taught to statistics majors as well as anyone in an engineering field, and it will also be a very valuable reference to anyone working in industry who is tasked with using data to make decisions about their processes.
The book is very thorough, covering everything from the basics of visualizing data (histograms, box plots, etc.) through basic DOE and SPC all the way to more sophisticated SPC concepts such as narrow-limit gauging, acceptance control charts, and cumulative sum charts. I cannot think of a topic in basic SPC that is not covered in this text. A great bonus is the CD that comes with the text that includes answers to all of the exercises and an add-in for Excel that performs Analysis of Means, making this great graphical tool for summarizing results of statistical analyses even more practical to use.
All in all, a very thorough text with many examples/case studies that would be useful to anyone in industry in charge of controlling and improving processes.

An Updated Classic

One of my prize possessions is this book, a copy of the original 1975 edition, signed by Professor Ott himself.
When I first got a job in Quality Assusrance, this was one of the books I consulted in my local college library. I soon found it was the best of the lot for its clear explanations, practical examples and sheer readability. When I came back into QA after working in another field, one of the first things I did was procure a copy of the book from a bookfinder - the 2nd hand copy I was delighted to discover also had Ott's signature!
It is great to see an updated edition is now on sale and that Ellis Ott's name is not forgotten, for he (as far as I can find out about him) is one of the unsung pioneers of Statistical Process Control. Ott is not longer with us, but the co-authors have sensibly decided to update a classic, rather than starting from scratch. The examples in the older book are as relevant today as they are then.
From what I can see, this book sticks to the philosophy of the earlier editions but has modernized its approach in some respects, especially in the notation of Experimental Design and in the use of Excel, which I also remommend as an easy-to-use PC tool. Highly recommended for practitioners of Statistical Process Control.

In her introduction, Phuoc describes the power of stories, explaining that Vietnamese children living in America can "learn about the land of their ancestors" from this compendium, and conveys "hope that these stories…become a vehicle for bridging gaps between cultures." American children will recognize familiar elements in tales such as "The Story of Tam and Cam," a Vietnamese Cinderella story, and "Why the Sea Is Salty," an entry reminiscent of Tomie dePaola's Strega Nona, wherein a greedy man learns a lesson. Much like European fairy tales, with which most readers will be familiar, these offerings reward men who are brave, loyal, and wise and women who are beautiful, clearly defined in one story as having "shiny black hair, smooth fair skin, and [a] graceful manner." While virtue is prized, violent punishments for evildoers are notably absent, with false friends being banished or losing their ill-gotten fortunes. About the Author
Tran Thi Minh Phuoc spent ten months in a refugee camp in Malaysia before coming to America. In 1984, after a 50-hour Greyhound trip from California, she reached Minnesota, where she found life's most precious treasures: education and a safe environment. She became Minnesota's first Vietnamese librarian, and has been an active storyteller for over 20 years.

Nguyen Thi Hop and Nguyen Dong began their careers as young professional artists in the South Vietnam of the 1960s, exhibiting in Paris, Taiwan and in cities in Germany and the US as well as in Saigon. They have illustrated books published in numerous countries and have frequently illustrated the work of renowned Vietnamese Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh.

Finally a great English-written Vietnamese folktales book

Awesome book for any curious mind that wants to know about the popular Vietnamese folktales. These are all of my favorite childhood folktales/fairytale that my mom had told me or I've read about! Brought back so much memories!!! The stories are very close to what I remember. The writings are beautiful and and illustrations are gorgeously detailed and colorful. Now I finally can read them to my non-bilingual kids who have very limited Vietnamese vocabulary.

A very good and challenging look at the unraveling of the protestant denominations and what our response should be

excellent quick read. Provides a uniqe interpretation of the decline facing mainstream protestant denominations, along with a thought provoking summary of the history that brought us to this point. The second half, where he deals with what our response should be is just as thought proviking. With that he gives some concrete ideas for ways to impliment his alternative approach. I found his determination to be Spirit and God focused, rather than ecclesiocentric, to be very refreshing. On the whole I found this little book to be well worth the time. The more I've thought about it, the more I've enjoyed it and been challenged by it.

Excellent advice for all church leaders!

Very timely and insightful perspective on the nature and role of the church. Whilst "hard-hitting" in terms of a realistic review of modern Church history and Christian movements, it also provides very helpful ways forward for churches with practical and common-sense advice. This is a must-read for all church leaders in these days of challenge and opportunity. We must stop trying to always "fix" the church. Changing mind-sets is very hard, but Alan provides some wise counsel to assist us to approach what it means to be a transformative church in our modern society.

This book offers one of the most cogent and concise descriptions of the predicament facing churches in America today, as well as the various responses over the past generation that have failed to address it deeply. Alan Roxburgh offers congregations simple and powerful practices of indwelling the biblical narrative, discerning what God might be up to in the neighborhood, and joining our neighbors through small experiments of witness and service. This is a very accessible, concrete, practical book--an excellent resource for congregations and their leaders.

Oracle Primavera are out of the gate with version 15.1 of P6. And Paul Harris is keeping up the pace with his latest corresponding training manual, Project Planning & Control Using Primavera P6, Ver 15.1, Professional Client and Optional Client by Paul Eastwood Harris. Having a copy of this book is not an option I think it s a requirement. Primavera/Oracle continues to make their software for planning & scheduling professionals more complex by adding to its very advanced capabilities and feature set. But Paul Harris, an experienced scheduler and P6 user, not an IT person, has written this terrific training and reference manual for the P6 student/user who understands how to manage projects but needs to learn how to use the software. Among this manual s compendium of tools, techniques, tips, and traps to using Primavera s latest software package. Harris wins again by writing a clear, user-friendly book to help the reader learn and use P6 effectively and efficiently. Using the successful format from his previously published manuals for Microsoft Project, P3, SureTrak, and previous P6 versions, Harris covers the bulk of P6 s feature set by flattening and shortening the steep learning curve of this complex software package. I ve used Harris books in my company s training classes for over a decade because of his clear writing style, the depth of feature coverage, and the ability to use the book as a reference book in day-to-day use. This book follows the lead of its predecessors it guides the user through a logical sequence of understanding the principles of project management, the steps required to set-up a project, and those required to update and maintain a project. Due to the complexity and feature set of P6, Harris book is designed to be used in a 3-day training class. The exercises are available as a free download from Harris web site. Harris goes end-to-end by covering the basics of the software and its advanced functions such as User and Administration Preferences and Advanced Scheduling Options, the 3 types of calendars (unlike P3 s 2 types), Roles and Resources and multiple ways of organizing the project (WBS, OBS, Contract, Phase, etc.). Harris also does a particularly good job in explaining the differences between 3 ways of stating percent complete: Physical Percent Complete, Duration Percent Complete, and Units Percent Complete and the 4 Activity Types. He has also introduces some new topics not covered in his pervious Version 7.0 book , including Customizable Menus , Tiled and Tabbed Windows , Auto-Reorganization , Time-scaled Logic Diagrams and more. And not only does he explain how to use the program at the project level, but he also explains the parent application of Primavera s Enterprise Management which filled a huge void for me when first using the book. Since scheduling requirements vary from project-to-project and company-to-company, Harris explains how to build and maintain schedules both with and without resources (manpower, equipment, money, materials). If you are using Primavera s latest complex and IT intensive scheduling system, I urge you to use Paul Harris treatise on Project Planning & Control Using Oracle� Primavera P6 Ver 8.2, Professional Client and Optional Client. Paul Harris has been writing books on how best to use Primavera software tools for as long as I can remember. I first started using P3 in 1985 and have been intimately involved with the software ever since. Paul Harris is an author who makes his day to day living using the tool and it shows in the details of his books. He catches the little things that pop up in the middle of an assignment and are never covered in the standard classes. This book is so comprehensive, with well placed visual pointers and guides, that depending on what chapters are selected, it can be used for a variety of classes from basic to advanced with special classes for costs and resources. This is not just a training manual but should be used as a constant reference "bible" for when you have to use parts of the software that you haven't used for a while. With a focus on application for construction, Paul does not miss anything in working through the definition of your project from the WBS, through coding, activity and relationship definition, how the critical path algorithm calculates (it's not a mystery like some other well known scheduling tools), right on through to resource and cost definition, assignment and analysis. Experience has shown that training provided by trainers who actually make a living using the tool they train on provides the best in-depth knowledge transfer experience for the student. Using a training manual that is written from the same perspective also enhances the training experience. As a practicing project planner scheduler and a Primavera P6 instructor, I have found this book immensely useful. The book layouts out in very clear terms, everything needed for a user to master this often-times complex application. This is the only book that I have found that comes from an objective point of view, explaining the ins and outs of this expansive program. Planning and scheduling a project can be an extremely difficult and unforgiving task for an individual or organization. Adding the need to model the delivery method in Primavera P6 can cause many unprepared users high anxiety. In his book, Paul layouts out in very clear and concise steps the project plan development process in Primavera P6 and why they are needed. I find this section in itself indispensable. As a part-time instructor of the software, I always, always, always refer my student to this section of the book so they can formulate in their minds the approach needed for creating an effective project plan. Other sections of the book also add enormous value in understanding things such project creation via the project creation wizard, importing and finally the reflection process. Other important topics covered are work breakdown structures, activities types, duration types, percent complete types, activity relationship types, baselines, as well as the updating/progressing process. Advance topics are also covered for those needing an understanding of multi-project scheduling, global functionally and software administration. The book brilliantly handles project modeling categories of task driven schedules and resource loaded schedules. Paul initially layouts out a developmental structure to expose the P6 user to methodologies associated with each modeling category and then throughout the remainder of the book, details out each of the processes. This framework can serve as a repeatable model when creating organizational processes and procedures that will maximize and individual or an organizations use of Primavera P6. As a project planner/scheduler, I use the book as an invaluable desktop reference. I find it priceless when trying to model complex delivery methods. About the Author
Paul Harris holds an Honours Degree in Civil Engineering obtained in the UK and is a Certified Cost Engineer through AACEI International, a PRINCE2 Registered Practitioner and a Managing Successful Programmes Registered Practitioner. He has worked in the project controls industry for a number of years and has assisted many companies in a range of industries to set up and run project controls systems. His Melbourne, Australia based company, Eastwood Harris Pty Ltd, offers project controls consulting and training services world wide with a strong focus on Microsoft Project and Primavera software. As a project controls consultant I have used a number of planning and scheduling software packages for the management of a range of project types and sizes. The first books I published were user guides/training manuals for Primavera SureTrak, P3 and Microsoft Project users. These were well received by professional project managers and schedulers, so I decided to turn my attention to developing books that demonstrated how the software is used with project management methodologies such as PRINCE2 and the PMBOK Guide. The book by Draghici is an excellent choice to be used as a textbook for a graduate-level bioinformatics course. This well-written book with two accompanying CD-ROMs will create much-needed enthusiasm among statisticians.

I really like Draghici's book. As the author explains in the Preface, the book is intended to serve both the statistician who knows very little about DNA microarrays and the biologist who has no expertise in data analysis. The author lays out a study plan for the statistician that excludes 5 of the 17 chapters (4-8). These chapters present the basics of statistical distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing, ANOVA, and experimental design. What that leaves for the statistician is the three-chapter primer on microarrays and image processing, plus all of the data analysis tools specific to the microarray situation. … it includes two CDs with trial versions of several specialised software packages. Anyone who uses microarray data should certainly own a copy.

About the Author
Sorin Drăghici holds the Robert J. Sokol MD Endowed Chair in Systems Biology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is a professor in the Department of Clinical and Translational Science and the Department of Computer Science, as well as the head of the Intelligent Systems and Bioinformatics Laboratory at Wayne State University. He is also the chief of the Bioinformatics and Data Analysis Section in the Perinatology Research Branch of the National Institute for Child Health and Development. A senior member of IEEE, Dr. Drăghici is an editor of IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology, and International Journal of Functional Informatics and Personalized Medicine. He earned a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of St. Andrews, UK.

thorough, rich, and readable

This book is extremely rich yet readable. It covers a lot of different topics, and chapters can be read in order or referred to as needed.
However, if you take the time to read it through carefully, you will enjoy yourself, because the author is a master of pedagogy, and often humorous.

While expression microarrays are the platforms covered by this book, most of the material has much broader application beyond that. Cell biology, R, statistics, experiment design, molecular pathways, and machine learning are all covered. Even if you don't work with microarrays, there is something in this book for you, anyway you should know the basics of microarray analysis.

Computer scientists or other non biologists may want to start at the beginning, which is an introduction to the cell and its basic mechanisms. It may seem like a lot of memorization and daunting to those who have never learned biology, but this chapter is well written with plenty of color images. It gives all of the fundamental biology needed to understand microarrays.

The author knows which topics need to be covered in more depth than other authors are generally willing to do. I especially appreciated the section on degrees of freedom. If you never really had a grasp on this topic (but used it anyway) you will be grateful for section 8.4!

Another chapter that I especially appreciated was "Experiment Design", which is so critical to any scientist of molecular biology and bioinformatics. How many of us in bioinformatics have been asked to analyze data from poorly designed experiments? Thanks to the extremely thorough preceding chapter on ANOVA, the chapter on experiment design is naturally set up for a straightforward and clear presentation of the rules, guidelines and concepts of experiment design. It presents the classic design models and several examples used by professionals in the field. The reader will feel confident designing basic experiments without having to refer the big hard core texts on the subject.

Throughout the book, very essential snippets of R code are revealed. You won't need much more or less than what you see here, once you have a little R under your belt. Dr Draghici's specialty is pathway analysis, and he is the coauthor of the R package "SPIA", available on bioconductor. The pros and cons of the different pathway analysis methods are discussed in detail.

Great Book!

What a great book. The author is an excellent teacher who is skilled in transferring his in-depth knowledge to people unfamiliar with the material. The book is engaging and highly readable. In his short, but densely-packed chapter on GO-Terms, I learned more from him in a couple hours than I did from TAs in a 3-hour class augmented by many additional hours of my own independent searching on the web to "fill in the gaps". Fantastic book! Draghici highlights the gotchas and pitfalls researchers inadvertently run into and don't know it. I constantly read and re-read sections of his book which are relevant to corners of my current research where I wonder if there was something that I might have missed. It is amazing how many "golden nuggets" of non-obvious information packs into a readable and concise format. I feel like I have a second adviser in my Doctoral research.

A unique and insightful R / statistics / microarray book

Readers of all backgrounds will find much to be pleased about with this book. Whether you need to learn basic biology or just need a refresher, this book will serve you well. Starting with basic biology, Draghici moves on to illuminate the basic issues confronting both Affymetrix and cDNA microarrays. The section on basic R programming is simple enough for a non-computer scientist to understand and yet moves rapidly enough to satisfy experienced programmers who will appreciate the commentary which helps to dispel some of the initial "weirdness" of R. I used this section to brush up on my R after being away for a while. Next the book covers statistics in a way that I found to be very readable. Many books will teach you statistics, but what sets this book apart from others is the way that it helps the reader to develop intuition about the statistics without sacrificing rigor. Later chapters focus on a variety of topics including machine learning / gene ontology / pathway analysis etc.

The color illustrations were an unexpected surprise in such a technical book and very useful in illuminating the material. In summary, this is a great book and a great price. You will want to keep it as a reference.
