The target of �SQL tuning is �the improvement of the existing execution plan.� The authors discuss the removal of brakes in the execution plan. Such "brakes" or bottlenecks can be recognized by a formal analysis of the execution plan. For this purpose no data model knowledge is needed. This is especially beneficial for database administrators because they are usually not or insufficiently �familiar with the data model. The book presents numerous practical examples with this method.
About the Author
Leonid Nossov was born in Yakutsk, studied mathematics in USSR and has worked in Germany as an Oracle spezialist for several software companies. In the last few years he has been in Advanced Customer Support at Oracle Germany. His work mainly involves performance tuning and troubleshooting.
Hanno Ernst comes from Zschopau in the Erz Mountains. Since qualifying as an electronics technician in communications technology at German Telecom he has been in Bamberg at the German Telecom subsidiary T-Systems. His main task is database administration and he is particularly interested in error and performance analysis.
Victor Chupis was born in Odessa, USSR. He studied electronics and information technology in Moscow. Since 2001 he has been working for Vodafone Germany. His special fields are database design, operations and performance tuning.

A great small book

There is a great small book! I've heard about this book accidentally. It is very compact and efficient. All you need is a formal interpretation of execution plan without any knowledge of the data model of the application. After reading of this book I achieved noticeable improvement of my tuning skills. It takes me much less time to get a good solution. This book explains formal SQL tuning methodology in very easy manner. There are almost no efforts to understand and to apply it successfully in practice. If you need a solution as soon as possible, there is a best way to get it.
The process of SQL tuning has been usually considered as an "art". One needs an artist, a wizard to have success. There are many books about SQL tuning describing how to try it. But this small book of Leonid Nossov and his co-authors is different. There is a description how sure to do it here. This is the first book I have seen that presents a clear methodology to solve the problem in a structural way. There is an example of transformation of SQL tuning from an art to an engineering method.
I can highly recommend this book: it's really must have!

usefull book for DBA and developers

Despite the fact that detailed run-time statistics in execution plan have already been available in Oracle 10g, their benefit to SQL performance analysis has not been well-known so far. The authors fill this gap and describe how, on the basis of detailed statistics, the bottlenecks in execution plan are to be found and how they are to be remedied.
Authors are addressing their book mainly to Oracle administrators, but it is also useful for highly qualified developers who are interested in the highest application performance.
