Great Text

This is the best nature writing book I have ever used for my university level Nature Writing course. My students love the selections. I can see their appreciation not only for nature but for vocabulary and style grow during the semester. They refer to the text often in their oral presentations and essays. It is most gratifying to have students read because they cannot put the book down. They also are going for the original texts so they can read more of the authors.

The analysis follows the use of kyrios in the Gospel from beginning to end in order to trace the complex and deliberate development in Luke's narrative of Jesus' identity as Lord. Detailed attention to Luke's narrative artistry and use of Mark demonstrates that Luke's nuanced and sophisticated christology binds the identity of Jesus to that of the God of Israel.

C. Kavin Rowe (Ph.D., Duke University) is assistant professor of New Testament at Duke University Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina. In addition to detailed exegetical studies on New Testament texts, Rowe has published articles on a variety of topics. He received the John Templeton Award for Theological Promise in 2009 for Early Narrative Christology.

Magnificent scholarship--how Luke develops kyrios to reveal Christ as lord and God

In the introduction to this book Rowe explains that he told a friend he was going to write a book on the subject of how Luke develops the word kyrios (that is, Lord) throughout his gospel. The friend gave him a "rather odd look and said something that roughly translates as, 'Hasn't that been done ad nauseam?" (p 1).

Perhaps because it seems so basic everyone simply assumes that thousands of scholars have already done this investigation. But, as Rowe points out, that just isn't so.

Rowe demonstrates how Luke uses kyrios time after time "not so much with theological propositions but with a panoply of literary and rhetorical devices that range from relatively simple, though significant, alterations of his Markan source to complex and extended paromasia. Throughout the story Luke uses kyrios so repeatedly that its reverberation within the narrative becomes the rhythm of the Gospel (p 29).

Small note: Rose does something I have rarely seen before in any biblical scholarship, which is to borrow examples from the likes of Shakespeare, or the prayer of Electra, and I think the book is much more interesting for it.

However, the actual line of his argument is utterly compelling simply by itself. The "main themes...Luke's theology of resonance and his christological focus" (p 81) is right on target. I was especially struck by Rowe's line of reasoning regarding the four Sabbath controversies in Luke.

What Rowe looks at is the cumulative effect of the gospel stories, the miracles, the disputes, all leading to the passion. This is such an intelligent way of examining the gospel that it staggers me how rarely biblical scholars actually use it. Instead, there has been, for the last two hundred years, a tendency to take one passage and beat it to death, shoving it into various shapes, trying to find a meaning it it alone.

Looking at the gospel as a whole, and examining the manner Luke uses kyrios makes a compelling case for what Luke was trying to say. What Rowe finds is that "the God of Israel is thus so concentrated in the figure of Jesus that they can share an identity...To apprehend the identity of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke is to include God, and the question, Who is God in Luke?, of necessity places Jesus at the center of the answer" (p 201).

This is a brilliant book. Highly recommended.

Well written and engaging

This is a great resource for anyone looking for a deeper study on Christology and the gospels' use of the greek word Kurios ("Lord"). Rowe has a tremendous grasp on Christology, especially in the book of Luke. This book is a great stepping stone for Christological studies in the gospels, as well as other places throughout the bible, i.e. Colossians 1, Acts, Ephesians 2. I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a scholarly report of Christology in the book of Luke. Superb job Mr. Rowe!

PON Research focus book

In reading this book I was disappointed as it implied it would discuss in detail the PON within an FTTX network, however the contributors were all research and development folks as such no real hands-on knowledge so the book was purely focused on what maybe and most of it was a combination of research and concept papers that I had already read from the Internet. Considering the cost of the book and its application to FTTX deployments, it is not worth reading if you are wanting information for deploying today's PON technologies. Of course it is a good read to see what is happening in the future and how it will affect your migration strategy, unfortunately it does not demonstrate what manufacturers are adopting these concepts.

As such, I could not recommend that anyone other than university students who are studying optical technologies to read this book (but of course those university students need to remember that is is predominately based on theory not practical application).

Excellent backing tracks

I got this book because of just one song: "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" which has been a favorite of mine since the very first time I heard it. Though I've been playing it for years, it's really fun to have such a good backing track to jam with.

If you want to learn Duane's and Dickie's solos for these several songs, the transcriptions are very well done. The recordings are of complete songs so you get entire solos (keyboard solos included--on CD only). Even the drums sound like ABB.

As a personal preference, there are a couple songs I'd have left out. "Little Martha" is one. Only Duane's part is transcribed. Bummer, because it's really not too hard for a single player to combine the best of both parts and play them at once. You won't get that here, but you may not care when you're playing Duane's part over the backing track of Dickie's part. Another song I'd have left off is "Revival". Not a bad song, I just don't think I'd ever want to play it.

In place of those two I'd prefer "Hot 'Lanta" and the *Live at Filmore East* version of "Stormy Monday" or even "Ain't Wastin' Time No More". Really, it's not my place to criticize what's not there, because this book is worth every penny. Maybe Hal Leonard would consider an additional Duane Allman, or Allman Brothers play along some day. It would sell.

There is A LOT to like about this book--my petty complaints aside. Who wouldn't want to jam out on "Blue Sky" or "Trouble No More"?

Over all this is a keeper. Good recordings, good transcriptions, good selections. Want more? Buy another book. The *Definitive Collection For Guitar* is out in 3 volumes, but you don't get play along CDs with those.

I'm perfectly happy jamming over "Liz Reed" until the neighbors can't stand it anymore.

This book is great as it comes with a CD that allows you to copy cat and play along with the lead guitar or play along with the rhytym and you supply the lead. A BLAST.
