The Rose and the Dagger (The Wrath and the Dawn), by Renée Ahdieh

Instant New York Times Bestseller

The much anticipated sequel to the breathtaking The Wrath and the Dawn, lauded by Publishers Weekly as "a potent page-turner of intrigue and romance."

I am surrounded on all sides by a desert. A guest, in a prison of sand and sun. My family is here. And I do not know whom I can trust.

In a land on the brink of war, Shahrzad has been torn from the love of her husband Khalid, the Caliph of Khorasan. She once believed him a monster, but his secrets revealed a man tormented by guilt and a powerful curse—one that might keep them apart forever. Reunited with her family, who have taken refuge with enemies of Khalid, and Tariq, her childhood sweetheart, she should be happy. But Tariq now commands forces set on destroying Khalid's empire. Shahrzad is almost a prisoner caught between loyalties to people she loves. But she refuses to be a pawn and devises a plan.

While her father, Jahandar, continues to play with magical forces he doesn't yet understand, Shahrzad tries to uncover powers that may lie dormant within her. With the help of a tattered old carpet and a tempestuous but sage young man, Shahrzad will attempt to break the curse and reunite with her one true love.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—This sequel picks up right where The Wrath and the Dawn left off. Shahrzad is enduring a self-inflicted banishment to the desert since her father's attempt at magic left the city of Rey in ruins. Intent on discovering a way to end Khalid's terrible curse, she and her sister care for their ailing father while negotiating the dangerous political tensions in their camp. Shahrzad must learn whom she can trust while seeking the most potent, and therefore volatile, magic in the world. Meanwhile, Khalid is still in Rey, secretly helping to rebuild the city while suffering from the painful consequences of resisting the mandate of his curse. Fans of the previous volume will not be disappointed with the second installment of this epic retelling of One Thousand and One Nights. This entry succeeds in every way. Beautiful, lyrical writing combines with a cohesive plot, richly drawn backdrop, and just the right mix of action and romance to create an undeniable new classic. The author does not summarize the events of the first book, so some readers will be confused until they remember the secondary characters and their significance. However, the fascinating protagonists, nonstop action, and compelling dialogue will suck them back in and hold them there right up until the thrilling conclusion. VERDICT A first purchase, especially for fans of lush retellings.—Sunnie Scarpa, Wallingford Public Library, CT

I loved the first book and its sumptuous storytelling and heart-pounding ...
By Katie
The Rose & the Dagger was one of my most anticipated reads of 2016. I loved the first book and its sumptuous storytelling and heart-pounding romance. I was hoping both would continue into the sequel, but sadly, they didn't.

The Wrath & the Dawn wasn't perfectly plotted, but it really didn't matter, because the romance and character development really took center stage. Unfortunately, the weak plot became more apparent in Rose, which felt like it was dragged out for far too long. The least interesting parts of Wrath (the war, Shazi's father, Tariq's resentment toward the Caliph) were the major thrust in this book, and none of it held my interest.

Even the relationship between Shazi and Khalid felt lackluster. They had one really great scene that was full of tension, but after that, there was no spark.

The brightest point of the book was Shazi's sister Irsa, but (view spoiler) I'll admit that I would LOVE a spinoff about her. She's a fascinating character.

Overall, I wanted a lot more from this. I think Renee is a great writer, but I never connected with this book. I almost wish Wrath had been a longer standalone. This sequel felt like too much book for not enough story.

Breathtaking Sequel from Renee Ahdieh
By Amazon Customer
Actual rating: 4.5 stars

"Your future is not set in stone, my dearest star. A coin turns on itself a number of times before it lands.”

This was the most amazing sequel to an even more amazingly magical series. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect ending to this duology, and Renee Ahdieh is definitely an author that should go on everyone's TBR list immediately. Her writing is absolutely brilliant and every line in this book is so beautifully written. There is something about this world that Ms. Ahdieh has created that never makes me want to leave, and honestly I could have re-read this book as soon as I finished. The Rose & the Dagger has a much different feel than the previous installment, as it does not focus so much on romance. However, don't worry, because that romance, while still very present, is not as necessary when compared to everything else that goes on in this story. There is so much to love about this novel, and if you haven't checked this out yet, you need to now!

“It was because they were two parts of a whole. He did not belong to her. And she did not belong to him. It was never about belonging to someone. It was about belonging together.”

Renee Ahdieh has this way of writing that just evokes so much emotion from both the reader and the characters alike. As soon as you start reading this novel, you are instantly transported back into Shahrzad and Khalid's world, and you never want to stop reading. You want to devour every single word of this book because you know it will be utterly amazing. While the romance does take a bit of a backseat, there are plenty of action-packed scenes that will more than appease readers. But don't you worry, because there are still plenty of swoonworthy moments that will leave you breathless. Their relationship has matured a great deal in the short time since the events of the last book, and because of this, it is much less angsty and fragile, and much more solid and unwavering. The lengths they will go to for each other prove just how dedicated they are to their love. But there is a curse to break and a kingdom that must be saved, and in order to do so lives must be lost and sacrifices must be made.

“Sometimes," he gasped, "the family you choose...is stronger than blood.”

There are a lot of twists and turns that I never saw coming in this story. Packed with betrayals and shocking surprises, Renee Ahdieh keeps you on the very edge of your seat until the very end. I can honestly say that I wasn't sure how everything was going to turn out. The fantasy elements that were mentioned in the first novel are expanded upon much more, and it made for many exciting moments. Shazi learns more about the powers she has, and we learn more about Khalid's curse. Ms. Ahdieh packs a lot of information into the story, however it never feels overwhelming. The pacing of this story is perfect, and everything that is revealed comes at a natural time in the story.

“The darker the sky, the brighter the stars.”

Friendships are tested and not everyone is who they appear to be. With betrayals around every corner, even the reader has no idea who to trust. The one character that I was excited to see in this story was Shazi's sister, Irsa. She is very different from her sister, and this difference provided a nice dynamic between the sisters. I loved reading how they interacted with each other, and each provided a nice balance to the other. But the thing that truly made her stand out was how she overcame her hesitations and fears to become a strong woman in her own right, and very much like her sister. We all know how strong Shazi is on her own, but it was nice to see the inspiration she was to Irsa. Together, the sisters possess a strong bond that allows both of them to empower each other.

“If you ask me, the best way to go about flying is to cut the strings tying you down."

The ending of this novel was even more amazing than the rest of this book. There was definitely a heart-stopping (and jaw-dropping) moment, and I was close to tears. But trust me when I say that the ending that Ms. Ahdieh delivers is worth every second of that worry over how everything will turn out. The best part of this story (and this duology in general) is the strong female characters that while flawed, are complex and characters that girls everywhere can look up to.

“It was easy to be good and kind in times of plenty. The trying times were the moments that defined a man.
And love? Love was something that did much to change a person. It brought joy as it brought suffering, and in turn brought about those moments that defined one’s character. Love gave life to the lifeless. It was the greatest of all living powers.
But, as with all things, love had a dark side to it.”

Renee Ahdieh has cemented her place as an author that is here to stay. I think it's easy to say that she had a lot to live up to given the popularity of the first novel, and she has proven that she can deliver, and will deliver in the best way possible. Was this as amazing as the first story, in my opinion no, however this came very, very close to being just as amazing as the first. I will say that I am happy that this is only a duology as this was the perfect way to end the series. The story wasn't dragged out and it was just enough. There is a power in knowing when a story has been told, and Renee Ahdieh knew exactly what she was doing, which shows even more how amazing an author she is. This is an absolutely beautiful, empowering novel that weaves magic, love, and action into a perfect tale for all ages. Go read this now!

Happy reading :)

I was not disappointed. Ahdieh does an amazing job of building up ...
By Olyvia M.
This review was originally published on the blog [...]

Wow. I quite literally could not put this down and I read it in one day. I spent the first half of the book just waiting for Shazi and Khalid to be reunited and when they finally were, I was not disappointed. Ahdieh does an amazing job of building up and continuing their relationship, while also adding some depth to Shazi’s other relationships, with her sister and Tariq.

I really enjoyed the extra magical aspect, especially Shazi coming in to her own powers and learning how they work. My favorite thing about Shahrzad is that she never lets other people and their actions decide her fate. She takes her life into her own hands and she will do anything to protect the people that she loves.

I do wish there was more, however. I think the book does wrap up nicely, but there were so many things and characters that were introduced and I wish we had gotten a better glimpse of them. Specifically, Artan and his aunt. Of all the new characters, Artan was my favorite and I just wish there was more of him and Shazi together, and him teaching her how to use and control her magic. I also wish there was more Despina in this book. One of the things I loved the most about The Wrath and the Dawn was her and Shazi’s friendship. I think it highlighted the importance of female friendship, and I wish that would have continued in this book. Because even though Shazi was reunited with her sister, it wasn’t the same dynamic as she felt like she had to keep secrets and sneak away rather than confiding in her.

Overall, I loved the nonstop, fast pace of everything that was going on. It made the book more intense and the surprisingly few scenes between Shazi and Khalid that much more powerful. I wish we had another book, and that I could give 4.5 stars on goodreads.

there's just one little thing
By E Rice
if you have bought lyford's book, _quill and beadwork of the western sioux_, you already have this book.
yes, its a wonderful resource--i thought so when i bought i under its original title. i thought this book, with the different title, would expand upon the other.
as long as you keep this information in mind, and only buy the book once under either title, you will be rewarded. since it was originally published by the government in 1940, there are no color plates, which is a great shame. however, some of the historic photos are worth the price of the book.
the instructions for both quill and beadwork are very good. there is a section that briefly analyzes design elements, very useful for creating your own designs.
i just wish i had known i already owned it under another title.

An old skill
By SHARON BONDI
I always loved the beadwork on Indian clothing and I always wanted to try it. It is much harder than it looks and takes all the patience you have in the beginning. The method is called "Lazy squaw" and involves applying small lines of beads, usually the fewer the better, to be sure the beads stay stitched down and the beads on the finished piece stay even and flat. (And there is nothing lazy about it.) Tne patterns in the book are easy to follow and variations are easy to create. If you can still find a form of graph paper where there are actual oval bead shapes in rows, patterns are incredibly easy to make. You can make the long strips used on the sleeves and leggings by loom and they look good but the women who perfected the craft never had them. If you get really ambitious and want to bead moccasins or a dress, looms won't do for them. The book does give a history which is very interesting. I enjoy the book and would recommend it for those seriously wishing to try it. Just be aware that seed beads are called that for their tiny size and they can go everywhere. Still it is an enjoyable craft and the results are both impressive and satisfying. Just don't get too ambitious for your first project and you will do more.

Craftspeople of all kinds will find Sioux Quill And Beadwork Designs And Techniques begins with a short history of Sioux art and patterns to quickly move into the specifics of creating and sewing quills and using beadwork techniques adapted for Sioux designs. A special guide to a very specific art.

Religions of Rome: Volume 2: A Sourcebook, by Mary Beard, John North, Simon Price

This book, the second of the two volumes that make up Religions of Rome, presents a wide range of documents illustrating religious life in the Roman world from the early Republic to the late Empire (both visual evidence and texts in translation). More than just a "sourcebook," it explores some of the major themes and problems of Roman religion (such as sacrifice, the religious calendar, divination and prediction). Each document has an introduction, explanatory notes and bibliography, and is used as the starting point for further discussion.

Always Pleasing
By Patrick J. Dickey
Religions of Rome, volumes I &II by Doctors Beard, North and Price is an invaluable work that is a necessity for any student of Classical Civilization, as the Oxford Classical Dictionary and H.H. Scullard's Festivals and Ceremonies of the Roman Republic. Throughout my years of study in the university, I have come to rely upon the work as a base for any research that I would embark upon. In this vein, I have to state that the exhaustive Chicago footnotes and bibliography are of extreme help when one needs to seek further primary and secondary source materials. In terms of the book's writing, I declaim with confidence that this is one of the few works to be written by committee and is better off for its. The text reviews subject matter in detail while remaining concise with subject matter placed into collection via topic related to epoch. Again, this work is the basis of any Classicist library and shall serve one diligently thought out one's life.

Book about Romans, by Romans
By Tom.Cosmic
This book (volume 2 of a 2 volume work) is an excellent selection of passages writen by Romans and their contemporaries about Romans and their religions. Each translation is preceded by a short description of the context of the passage, and references. Included are paragraphs from books, quotes from lost works, inscriptions from monuments, publicly posted legal announcements, and grafitti.

It was a breath of fresh air for me, since the contemporary source material in this subject is so sparse that most books on ancient religion are a doubtful parade of their authors' opinions. And although the passages from ancient writers are laden with their opinions, with the help of the editors of 'Religions of Rome, vol II' it's obvious and once exposed, revealing.

Well-Organized Selection of Source Material for the History of Roman Religion.
By mirasreviews
"Religions of Rome, Volume 2: A Sourcebook" is the companion volume to "Volume 1: A History", also written by Mary Beard, John North, and Simon Price. This volume contains translations of many source documents referenced in Volume 1, though it does not attempt to include every piece of evidence for the history of Roman religion by any means. Most of the material is from the 1st century BC to the 2nd century AD, as literature and archeological evidence related to religion are most abundant from that period. The authors have chosen to focus primarily on Rome and Italy. In choosing which sources to include, their "guiding principle has been to use the texts we cite argumentatively, and to show that Roman religion was not a static body of doctrine, but a subject of debate, negotiation, definition and re-definition."

In contrast to Volume 1, this Sourcebook is organized thematically, not chronologically. This allows readers to compare religious ideas and practice over time on the same theme. Each of 13 chapters addresses a different topic: Earliest Rome, The deities of Rome, The calendar, Religious places, Festivals and ceremonies, Sacrifices, Divination and diviners, Priests and priestesses, Individuals and gods. Rome outside Rome, Threats to the Roman order, Religious groups, and Perspectives. Each chapter is divided into sub-sections, each with its own introduction and recommendations for further reading. The source materials are displayed in larger font with explanatory introductions and their own footnotes, so there is a lot more information than just the source material itself.

Most sources are literary, but there are also a fair number of inscriptions, paintings, sculpture, coins, bronze items and buildings cited. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of illustrations. My one frustration with this book is that some literary sources are not dated, neither for the period they refer to nor the date they were written, and it was puzzling to me that some were dated and some not. Perhaps readers are expected to be able to place the Roman and Greek authors in time as if it were second nature. At the end of the book, there is a glossary, list of deities and their epithets, bibliography, index of texts cited, and a general index. This Sourcebook is generally a well-conceived volume and, in conjunction with Volume 1, an excellent overview or starting point for serious study of Roman religion.
