He was a dealship mechanic and for many years, the proprietor of Red Line Service, a Porsche-only repair shop in Sant Monica, California. Building and racing competition 911s added to his knowledge base. In this book he shares those accumulated years of experience to guide you through the bewildering maze of 911 models and their individual strong points and problem areas. Now in print for over twenty years, this seventh edition is enlarged, expanded and features the latest information on the entire range of air-cooled 911s.

Doesn't seem really updated

I have previous versions of this book, and found each to be fairly complete in terms of what to look for when purchasing a used 911. I used to be a Porsche/Audi mechanic, and I never felt there was much I would have added to what Pete had written.
This latest edition, though, seems pretty cursory on the newer models. If you're on a budget and looking for a newer 911, this book doesn't go much into the reliability, differences in the engine rebuild procedures with the water-cooled engines, etc. There are plenty of late-model air-cooled 911s out there with 200,000 miles on them. I've even seen early water-cooled 911s with 200,000 miles. This book seems not to have much to say about the wisdom of buying one of these high-mileage cars, what fails, what's good, or what to look for. In fact, the books seems to have been written by someone who's not really servicing Porsches any longer, so the detailed information is just not there.
Obviously, if you're looking at buying an early-70s 911, you'll have different expectations about the condition of the car, and this book continues to be a good guide there.
For the newer ones, though, you'll need to augment the information in this book with pre-purchase inspections by a knowledgeable and trustworthy Porsche mechanic.

Porsche 911 -- The Mechanic's View

If you own or are thinking of buying a Porsche, this is a must read. The author is a Porsche mechanic who runs ( ran )a Porsche repair shop in California. And while the book presents a pro-Porsche outlook, it also candidly assesses the strengths and weaknesses of the 911 models year by year.
For one contemplating buying a Porsche 911, this is an invaluable book because it includes what goes wrong with these cars, and how much it will set you back financially to correct the problems. This is an element of ownership not usually dealt with in other buyer's guides.
The writer's style is concise and amusing and if you are even thinking about buying a Porsche, this is a great place to start. It is not the ONLY guide you should read, but it should be the first.
Porsche owners will also benefit from this book as it contains a lot of information learned from a career of repairing these unique cars.

An Excellent Guide for First-timers

Though the author is clearly Porsche-passionate, this is a well-balanced primer on what to look for, what to look out for, and how to determine if buying the object of your desires is a good idea. The cost of this book is a very small investment that can pay big dividends down the road. It won't tell you how to perform a true pre-purchase inspection, but it will tell you how to decide whether proceeding to a PPI is a waste of time and money. I'm shopping for a used P-Car, and I find myself referring back to this book over and over. Combing internet forums and reading enthusiast magazines taught me a lot, this book filled in many of the remaining (and considerable) gaps.
