It's about time

Isn't God a white-haired, able-bodied male? As so many myths have been exploded since liberation theology entered our consciousness, perhaps handicapism is the final frontier (probably not.) In 1980 I became temporarily handicapped due to a car accident and it opened my eyes and spirit to disability. In the last few years I have become handicapped in ways sometimes invisible, but increasingly more visible. (Nancy Eiesland spends some time discussing the vocabulary of this "condition." I'm using words I'm comfortable with; just as she used the words she's comfortable. Like everything else there is no unanimity of style.

The book is described as a master's thesis or having been derived from her master's thesis. It shows. That's both good and bad news. It exercised my brain cells - always a good thing even for folks who aren't handicapped. In addition to reach an audience including church leaders, she needed to give us the theological justification for what she is proposing. Agree with her theology or not, you have to take seriously adding handicapism under the umbrella of liberation theology. She couldn't have fulfilled this purpose without writing it from an academic point of view. She used the experience of two other authors who happen to be handicapped to increase the variety of handicap experiences. I read Nancy Mairs', Waist High to the World several years ago and enjoyed it enormously, but Nancy Eiesland is coming at handicapism not only from the point of view of lived experience, but also asking, "What does it mean to me as a person of faith to be handicapped? Can I be a disciple with a broken body? How should church leaders use the gifts of our brothers and sisters to enrich and challenge our churchs/synagogues/ mosques?"

I, or we as a people are, inately nosy and I could have gotten to her point and the issues she raised sooner if she had described her disability near the beginning of the book just so I could put her story in context. It doesn't make any difference to her work or point of view, but... I have only read the beginning of the book so far and all I know about her is that she uses a wheelchair and has braces. It sounds as though this situation has been ungoing since childhood.

Eiesland has barely opened the door on theological reflection on handicapism. I look forward to the next authors who will take us further.

A fresh perspective from a side often ignored

As a theology student and as a person with a chronic illness that occasionally disables me from day-to-day activities I found this book to be just what I had been searching for from my theology books for years. The myth of disability as an affliction for sin is dispelled! The myth that someone with a disability is dispelled! The book reminds all that in Christian theology we are all made in imago dei even those of us with physical and medical disabilities. Thank you to the author for claiming me to be made in the image of God! I highly recommend this book for all theology students as well as those who are hurting in their relationship with God due to illness.

A Great Read

This is one of the best books on theology and the disabled that I have ever read. As a student preparing for the ordained ministry I would recommend this book to all seminarians and pastors. It is time that the church rethink it's response to the disabled. Nancy Eisland does this wonderfully when she reminds us of the wounds of Christ.

About the Author
Kwa Chong Guan is Head of External Programs, Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies, Nanyang Technological University. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Department of History, National University of Singapore. He was previously Head of the SAFTI Military Institute's Department of Strategic Studies and concurrently, Adjunct Associate Professor in the Division of History of the National Institute of Education's School of Arts. Before joining the SAFTI Military Institute, Mr Kwa served in various capacities in the National Heritage Board, the National Museum and the Oral History Center. Mr Kwa started his working career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before being posted to the Ministry of Defence. He was commissioned into the Singapore Armed Forces in 1969 and had served in a variety of reservist command and staff appointments up to Division level.

An excellent textbook

For those readers looking for a serious textbook on cosmological inflation, this is it!But of course, they should beware that it is fully technical, and has nothing to do with Andrew Liddle's small book, "An Introduction to Modern Cosmology". This is the real stuff, written by two experts who were instrumental in the development of the "slow-roll inflation" paradigm, and summing up all the latest developments in modern cosmology.
Starting with a small introduction about the hot Big Bang, the authors go on to an in-depth treatment of inflation and its consequences. The simplest model is then exposed and developed into its extensions, such as the Lambda-CDM model, the currently accepted model of inflationary cosmology.
Needless to say, the book offers also a fairly detailed treatment of the CMB and its anisotropies, acoustic oscillations and perturbation theory, and the CMB power spectrum, which are the latest tools in cosmological research.
However, those who are looking for a complete treatment of CMB anisotropies will not find it here.They could turn, for instance, to many articles on arxiv, e.g.the one by Ruth Durrer (astro-ph/0109522)which develops this subject in more detail.
All in all, this book by Liddle and Lyth will probably serve as a textbook on cosmology for the coming ten years.

Breaking Through

I had the pleasure of reading an ARC of Breaking Through and can say that Reasor caught my attention and held it through the entire novel. This is the second book in Reasor's Heartbreaker series, so the secondary characters are familiar and it's very nice to "see" what's been happening and in their lives. The newest romance in the SEAL team - between Brett and Tess sparkles with a combination of desire and conflict. Reasor has deftly combined the real life world of a Navy SEAL (she has an inside track to the real deal) with the complexity of a contemporary romance and tingling suspense. This one is a keeper.

Another GREAT book by Reasor

"Breaking Through" is another great book by Teresa Reasor. I've read each book she's published and never been disappointed. In "Breaking Through", readers delve deeper in to the world of the Navy SEAL team we first got to know in "Breaking Free". The hero, Brett Weaver, is as alpha as they come, and the heroine, Tess, is spunky and tender. The two together are perfect, not only for the romance that builds between them (although make no mistake - the romance is hot!), but for the mystery, danger, and intrigue that surround them. I also really enjoyed the secondary characters in this book and they storylines surrounding each. Brett's mother, Clara, gets her own chunk of the story, which also involves Brett's former doctor, Russell and his son Evan. We're also treated to a bit more story from the beloved characters from "Breaking Free", Zoe and Hawk. I feel like I've come to know a whole "family" of people in this series, and reading this book was like getting to visit with each family member. "Breaking Through" has so much to offer... romance, mystery, danger, suspense, military intrigue. There truly is something for everyone here. HIGHLY recommend this book!

Andre Bormanis is a former NASA scientist and is the Science Consultant for Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and the current Star Trek feature films.

Enjoyable, lite science reading

It is an interesting book and is easy to read. It is broken up into chapters, and in each chapter is a one to two page sections on a particular subject like telepathy. It hits a wide area of subjects.
Andre Bormanis, science advisor for the Star Trek franchise, explains the science in broad layman's terms, but enough to explain the basics and the logic behind what the team did.
I enjoyed reading it even with a sever lack of previous knowledge in some of the areas. It gave a neat look into the why they handle the science on the show. If you don't have too much time to sit down and read or you just want to have something to read during the commercials, this is an good book to have.

A great book on the real science of Star Trek

I liked this book. I haven't read much other Star Trek books, so I don't have much to compare to. I really liked the authors easy, concise explanations for things like warp drive, wormholes, alien biology, time... all the favorite sciences, and what's real and what's not! The segments are based on accounts from specific episodes with "science logs" from favorite Star Fleet personelle. The photo's and such add a nice touch as well. In short, if you like Star Trek, and ever wondered if what you saw was possible, I highly recommend this book. The science-minded will love it!

Looks like a poor photocopy

Nice idea for a book, lots of good information, and well written.
But the quality of the printing is very poor! It looks like they scanned an original at low resolution and then printed from the scan. The lettering is fuzzy, and any small size type can be almost impossible to read.
This really affects the clarity of the illustrations. This was originally a lushly illustrated book and there are numerous photographs (on every third or forth page on average) but the low resolution scan nature of this printing now makes many of them useless. Photographs with large dark areas show little or no detail, and many photographs have an alternating dark and light pattern that looks like we are looking through bubblewrap.
The last time I saw a book this poorly printed it was a photographic copy of a mainstream book that was run off in Taiwan. At that time (and perhaps still) copyright laws did not apply in Taiwan, and there was a thriving business of low cost book knockoffs.
This book looks like it may be an example of "publishing on demand", and if this book is an example of what we can expect from this technology then it is a definite step down in quality.
