My generation was touched by the war in Vietnam, but only in the sense that our parents were part of it--whether they marched for peace or served in the military or fell somewhere in between. Recommended reading concerning Vietnam

This is the seminal work relating to how we got ourselves immersed in Vietnam. I'm a Vietnam Veteran, and I have always thought our reasons for being there were misguided at best. In this exhaustive look at the gradual build-up to the maximum troop levels in 1969, it is apparent that our reasons were much less than misguided. It makes me angry that many good people died in this war, this senseless, stupid exercise of power gone awry. It is very sad not only that the Vietnam War occurred, it is very apparent that we fail to learn from the lessons of history (read: Iraq and Afghanistan).

"The Best and the Brightest" is an excellent work, deserving of the Pulitzer Prize awarded to Mr. Halberstam.

A must-read for anyone who is interested in the Vietnam War.

This is an exceptionally well-written book about the way John F. Kennedy's idealistically selected cabinet dragged us down the muddy, dirty, twisted road and into the Vietnam conflagration. Nowhere, save in McMaster's more recent treatment (Dereliction of Duty, 1996) is the critical role of Robert S. McNamara in this debacle, so critically or accurately portrayed. Halberstam treats a number of critical subplots, too, such as the destruction of the "flexible response advocates" among the junior officer corps by Eisenhower's Secretary of Defense, the lamentable "Engine Charlie" Wilson, or the enmity between distinguished paratroop commanders Maxwell Taylor and James Gavin, or LBJ's complete consternation with Kennedy's Undersecretary of State for Southeast Asia, the decorated veteran of Merrill's Marauders and the OSS, Roger Hilsman (arguably the only man in the administration who knew anything at all about Southeast Asia in General and Vietnam in particular). An added value of Halberstam's treatment comes in the form of his detailed, insightful and assiduous character studies of all the principals, from nominal Republican McGeorge Bundy, the only non-PhD ever to serve as Harvard's Dean of the Undergraduate school, to Secretary of State Dean Rusk, intellectually despised by his mentor, Dean Acheson. This work is a must-read for anyone interested in both the Kennedy administration and in the question of how we got snookered into this impossible war in the first place.

My eyes were opened by the incredible waste of money and systematic destruction of a country I witnessed while there. But I remained basically uninformed about the politics that sent me half way round the world. For anyone who still is interested in that story, "The Best and the Brightest" is a must read.

About the Author
Born and raised in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Beverly Merritt attended the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay. She lived in Florida for 30 years until her husband took early retirement and moved to Ferrum, Virginia in 1994. Beverly started working on local genealogy shortly afterwards and started writing books on courthouse records in 1995. She co-founded the Franklin County Genealogical Society with Nancy Ann Waid Nethken in 1995 along with the Franklin County Heritage Library with Cheryl Ramsey in Rocky Mount. Beverly served as President of Franklin County Genealogy Society, Library Director and after merger as President and Treasurer of Franklin County Historical Society. She began publishing books in 1995 and is the author of three marriage record books, three births & deaths books, 1840 census, 1870 & 1880 census with Henry Hopkins, Rocky Mount Voters Registration, Franklin County Heritage Society Cemetery Book with Cheryl Ramsey and Henry County books on the Poor House Records, birth records and soldiers book.

In contrast, the book argues that this provides insufficient explanation of events. To discuss financial factors as causes of financial crisis risks describing the phenomena without illustrating the root causes. Instead, the book argues that systemic drivers of capitalism (rooted in production), probably best understood by Marx, actually do provide a more plausible explanation of the causes of the financialization and erosion of state sovereignty. In addition, the Post-Keynesian descriptions of monetary processes are considered to best reflect the actual reality of the monetary system. This represents an interesting synthesis of the classical Marx with modern money theory. The interpretation of Marx used to explain this financial transformation has been named the Temporal Single System Interpretation, which illustrates Marx’s value theory across periods and identifies a tendency towards falling profit rates. It is claimed that falling profits, in turn, are an underlying driver of the systemic propensity towards financialisation, crisis and stagnation. The empirical findings presented, taken from case studies of the UK and Germany, appear to support this view.

The central argument is that the response of agents (including the state) to the profit tendency has been a significant driver of the observed financial transformation. The book then concludes that this synthesis provides a more appropriate explanation of the historical transformation of the financial system since the Great Depression, than much of the financialization literature, and illustrates the source (and operation) of financial power in the modern capitalist state and market.

Stumptown has become one of my favorite series and I was eagerly anticipating this third volume in the series. I'll admit I did not take to this 3rd volume as much as I did the first two. I think the change in artist may have had a hand in that. Not that the art is bad. Not at all, its just that Dex looks different. Be that as it may this was still a book I enjoyed reading and I'll be eagerly looking forward to the next volume.

This relatively short book aims to provide both a historic overview and a theoretic framework for analyzing the formation and conceptualization of Russia's national interest, with particular emphasis on Russia's historic and evolving relationship with the West. The book contains a chronology of Russian foreign policy from 1985 to the present, and relies on many original Russian-language sources. The work is divided into eight chapters, with a historic overview, a basic introduction to international relations theory and its implications for understanding Russian foreign policy, as well as chapters on Gorbachev's new thinking, Russia as great-power balancer, Russia as great-power pragmatist, and Russia as an assertive great power. It concludes by analyzing prospects for change and continuity in Russian foreign policy. Recommended.

Book came in less than described condition

Not only is there a LOT more highlighting, writing and underlining in this book than was originally described, it's the WRONG EDITION! I ordered the 2010 edition (2nd) and instead got the 2006 first edition, the problem is i have to use if for a class and don't have time to reorder, but there are 2 chapters missing from this one!

Misadvertising at its best, will not purchase from this seller again.
