THEY ARE THE BEST FOR A FIRST READ!

Enid’s early works include the ‘Secret’ books about Peggy, Mike, Nora and Jack. They were the catalyst which encouraged me to start reading more than 50 years ago. Thank you, Enid.

The BBC, many public libraries, local authorities and alleged educational experts have been completely wrong about the worth of the Blyton works. I can remember having substantial difficulty obtaining the original versions of the books. Quite a few shops would not stock them then but they were wonderful stories for teenagers! The tales are great to read for their simplicity and straightforwardness.

When one did find copies of the book they were quite expensive all those years ago but great to own. I loved the physical appearance of the books as well which I treasured as a youngster with the way in which the books were produced then making them somehow much easier to read.

It’s a delight to read these stories of adventure again in middle age although recent editing has diminished some of the memories I have of the original editions and words used then (but I am now getting old).

Never mind… these books remain one of my best friends for life: they began my own reading adventure so do read these special adventures for yourselves.

Lots of info, fun to read

There have been a flurry of scholarly books published in the last few years on the history of ice cream, but one that preceded them, Anne Cooper Funderburg's 1995 "Chocolate, Strawberry, and Vanilla: A History of American Ice Cream" is still a favorite of mine for sheer depth of quirky fact and odd information. I loved learning, for example, that after the Civil War, street peddlers in big cities nationwide were known as Hokey Pokey Men-and that the cheap ice cream they sold was called "Hokey Pokey." Even better? Funderburg's explanation that etymologists still quibble over the origin of the Hokey Pokey moniker-some linking it to the Italian for "O, che poco!" Meaning, "Oh how little!" or "Oh how cheap!" Throughout, Anne packs lots of well-researched story, but keeps the delivery light as the beloved subject.

A Very Good Book - But Won't Stand by Itself

This is one of three books I own on the subject & really wouldn't want to be without it, but having said that, it is not as complete as the other two I rate above it. For example, there is absolutely nothing in this book about finishing your guitar. I understand that finishing a guitar almost a separate topic in itself (and there are two good books on that), but the two other "building" books I prefer at least make decent attempts to cover the topic. It is especially sad nothing is said coinsidering the finish shown on the guitar (check out the back cover photo) the book purports to show how to build has an awesome, but very subdued burst color scheme with a glass-like finish to it. I can imagine if I was some teenager or young person who spent my money on this and found out what it doesn't have - I'd be mad! On the positive side, it does actually include a full-size plan for the guitar shown in the book. Bad part of that is it would be difficult (if not impossible)to build the guitar shown with the elctronics in that there is absolutely no information shown on the plan regarding the needed electronic components. If you refer to the book's chapter on assembly & setting up the guitar, there is only a generic discussion of electronic components with no specific discussion of the requirements to build the guitar in question. I understand how to read a construction plan and electrical diagrams, but can find nothing in the various electrical diagrams that looks like what's shown on the plans (even though it uses several of the detail sections of the construction plan as illustrations in the book). There are also some non-standard symbols used in the diagrams, for example what does an "X" mean on a terminal of the five-position switch? Add to that there is absolutely no mention of what the third rotary switch/potentometer shown on the plan & in the photos is used for, and it could be very confusing for somebody not really adept at electronics. Anybody know for sure what that third switch is for (I have my suppositions, but don't know for sure) - let me know, please.

Good points of the book are providing a well-drawn plan anybody could start with, even though it is not complete. Another good point is the large format layout with good use of color throughout and some excellent diagrams, though it is not always exactly clear to what they pertain. There is also a very good section on considerations regarding wood selection, which even covers some of the exotic woods that are starting to find their way into electric guitar manufacture. A very good setion on design criteria is also included, and with over 38 pages (of the 142) dedicated to making the neck on an electric, if you can't make a guitar neck after reading this book, then you'll never be able to. All in all, a good book I'd recommend adding to your collection, but only after you first get the other two which are better books. As for which books those are, read around this website more and you'll find the ones to which I'm referring.

Great Resource

I have been interested in making my own electric guitar for quite some time now, but have found it difficult to know where to even begin. Enter my book search. I decided I should get a book to help me begin modifying, and eventually, create my own electric instruments. When I first looked at buying this book, I was a bit skeptical. The cover looked a tad dated to me, and I didn't want to end up getting an older book that detailed how to build a guitar in the 1970s. I read what it was about, however, and decided that for the cost I couldn't go wrong. I am very glad I went through with it and bought it. When it came in the mail a few days later, I was excited to see a detailed book not only instructing how to create your own guitar in great detail, but WHY the small details mattered. Everything from step-by-step instructions to helpful tips were there to make sure that even a complete amateur could build a decent guitar with a little bit of hard work. The book didn't get into biases or telling you what parts or styles you should use, it simply told you what to expect with each type of wood, pick-ups, tools, and any other parts/materials/combinations that you could need. I wouldn't expect to make a professional guitar after reading this book, but it has given me the resources I need to get a good start, and I will be using it as a guide for my next guitar (and probably any I make after that). Many thanks to the author for producing this great book.

Decent book

Very good book. Decent explanation of the components of an electric guitar.

Some of the woodworking is beyond beginner level.

Decent level of photos throughout, to illustrate things.

Does come with plans for a guitar also.

Decent section on how to set the proper intonation on an electric guitar also, and setting bridge adjustments and truss rod adjustments... so, even if you have no intention of building a guitar, this book has some good info on "setting up" an existing guitar.

I liked the book. If you were going to do what he says, with the proper materials, this wouldn't be a cheap guitar you end up with. However, it would be a premium quality guitar at a fraction of the "big name" price... So, if you're just looking for a cheap guitar, there are any number of places to go buy a cheap guitar.

If you want to build a guitar that is equal to or greater than a Fender or Gibson, this book will tell you how.

A sidebar discussion on calculating brake, indicated, and friction performance parameters provides mathematical information for readers who like such technical details. Future developments of MotoGP engines, including the use of biofuels and recovery of thermal and braking energy, are presented. The introduction concludes with a chart that details the winners of the various classes of WCGP motorcycle racing since the competition began in 1949. The bulk of the book consists of four previously published SAE technical papers that were expressly chosen by Dr. Boretti to provide greater insight to the relationships between engine parameters and performance, namely the influence on friction and mean effective pressure of traditional spark ignited four stroke engines tuned for a narrow high power output. The first paper provides the reader with a quick way to estimate the friction loss and engine output. The second paper discusses output and fuel consumption of multi-valve motorcycle engines. The third paper, published in 2002, compares WCGP engines developed to comply with the then-new FIM regulations that allowed four-stroke engines in the competition. The fourth paper examines specific power densities and therefore the level of sophistication and costs of MotoGP 800 cm3 engines. About the Author
Alberto Boretti is a research professor of mechanical engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. After he received his PhD from the University of Florence, Italy, in 1988, he was a senior researcher and project and team manager in the automotive industry for 17 years. Within the FIAT group, he has been involved in many racing engine projects, mostly with Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, and Fiat Auto Corse. His last position in industry was manager of four-stroke engines for Aprilia racing in 2006. Within the university setting, he supports teaching and research in motorsport. During his career he has worked on many different racing engines, including F1, F3, super touring, rally car, and Superbike and MotoGP motorcycle engines.

A love story with a difference. The hero is older by 15 years and has known the heroine all her life. They are family friends and inspite of the age difference they are both very close friends. The story starts with events that happen within a week that change the life of every character and makes the hero leave never to return. But return he does after 10 long years, back to the girl he left behind who has morphed into a beautiful but stoic woman. Will they both and their family let go of the past and recreate the closeness that once existed?

A well written story that traces the path towards healing for all the characters, especially the main characters. Along the way we get a glimpse into their mental tensions, and physical conflicts. Added to that is a scare of a possibility of a murder making them delve into the events that happened in that fateful week 10 years ago. And realize that to overcome the past one has to want to change from within. Its an enjoyable read that keeps the readers glued from start to finish.
