Glass: A World History, by Alan Macfarlane, Gerry Martin

Picture, if you can, a world without glass. There would be no microscopes or telescopes, no sciences of microbiology or astronomy. People with poor vision would grope in the shadows, and planes, cars, and even electricity probably wouldn't exist. Artists would draw without the benefit of three-dimensional perspective, and ships would still be steered by what stars navigators could see through the naked eye.

In Glass: A World History, Alan Macfarlane and Gerry Martin tell the fascinating story of how glass has revolutionized the way we see ourselves and the world around us. Starting ten thousand years ago with its invention in the Near East, Macfarlane and Martin trace the history of glass and its uses from the ancient civilizations of India, China, and Rome through western Europe during the Renaissance, Enlightenment, and Industrial Revolution, and finally up to the present day. The authors argue that glass played a key role not just in transforming humanity's relationship with the natural world, but also in the divergent courses of Eastern and Western civilizations. While all the societies that used glass first focused on its beauty in jewelry and other ornaments, and some later made it into bottles and other containers, only western Europeans further developed the use of glass for precise optics, mirrors, and windows. These technological innovations in glass, in turn, provided the foundations for European domination of the world in the several centuries following the Scientific Revolution.

Clear, compelling, and quite provocative, Glass is an amazing biography of an equally amazing subject, a subject that has been central to every aspect of human history, from art and science to technology and medicine.

Amazon.com Review
Imagine a world without glass: no light bulbs, no windshields, no telescopes, no computer screens, and, of course, no glasses. "It is true that other substances, such as wood, bamboo, stone, and clay, can provide shelter and storage," write Alan MacFarlane and Gerry Martin in Glass: A World History. "What is special about glass is that it combines these and many other practical uses with the ability to extend the most potent of our senses, sight, and the most formidable of human organs, the brain." As a piece of technology, however, glass has received almost no previous attention. Nobody knows who invented it, though the ancient Egyptians or Mesopotamians are the likeliest candidates. It wasn't until Europe's early Renaissance, however, that glass was used for something more than mere jewelry and ceramics. It played a vital role in the growth of Western science, marking a key difference between European civilization and civilization everywhere else. "The invention of spectacles [in the 13th century] increased the intellectual life of professional workers by fifteen years or more," say the authors--a development of enormous economic and cultural importance that contributed to "the foundations for European domination over the whole world during the next centuries." This is a bold and beguiling thesis, and it's a wonder that it took until now for somebody to think of it and articulate it so well. --John J. Miller

From Library Journal
MacFarlane (anthropological science, Univ. of Cambridge) and Martin, a historian of glass instruments, make the case for the centrality of glass in the artistic renaissance and scientific revolution that took place in Western Europe from the 14th to 17th centuries. They discuss the origins of glass making and trace its development and usage across centuries and multiple cultures (Europe, the Middle East, China, India, and Japan). Their discussion combines cultural, artistic, and aesthetic viewpoints of glass within these cultures with history and developments in science. The result is a thoroughly readable, carefully argued work, filled with delightful surprises (such as the discussion on eyeglasses, vision, and art). An excellent example of microhistory (think Mark Kurlansky's Cod), this is required for history of science collections and recommended for large public and academic collections. From Booklist
At the beginning of this sophisticated query into the importance of glassmaking, the authors imagine our civilization without glass: lab work stops; window frames stand empty; vessels become opaque. Macfarlane and Martin then argue that glassmaking was critical in bringing about Renaissance painting and the scientific revolution. They also suggest that the inferiority of glassmaking in India, China, and Japan was a factor in the failure of science and realistic art to take root in those civilizations. Claims of such embracing historical causation require convincing evidence, which the authors interestingly present, hinging on the glass industry of early modern Venice, birthplace of transparent crystal glass. From that time on, light was seen in new and shimmering ways by artists such as Brunelleschi, telescope and microscope users, and those who bought window glass and mirrors. To examine glass' reception in East Asia, the authors discuss artwork, which tended to remain symbolic and without perspective, venturing anthropological reasons for this stasis. A novel and inquisitive examination of a common but remarkable technology. Gilbert Taylor

Hard to find a more researched book on the history of glass
By R. R. Morris
A book that's a little bit away from my usual (other than history) yet I must say if there is a book to discuss the history of glass it would be hard to imagine any other authors doing more research than the ones for "Glass a World History." Not only is glass today so ubiquitous but when we are confronted with it it's usually transparent thus we pay even less or no thought to it. It helps to take a historical quote or two from someone's first reaction to glass to refresh our consciousness of it; "The shops are surrounded with [glass] and usually the merchandise is arranged behind it, which keeps the dust off, while displaying the goods to passers-by.." notes one very old observation. Do we ever "see" the glass in store casements and windows? No, we see merchandise. Do we ever see the glass in our windows? No, we see the view on the other side - outside or in. Do we ever see the glass that holds our wine, the glass protecting the face of our clocks and watches? Even if we complain about our eye-glasses it's not really the glass as much as the frames around them! Who thinks of the glass in microscopes, telescopes, test-tubes and beakers? We don't see the glass in the mirror but instead our focus is on the reflection. It's not the glass of the light-bulb but the light emitting from it. It's the photo behind the picture-frame, the perfume inside the glass bottle, the food in the glass jar, on and on..... Glass is all around us yet its very nature hides itself so excellently.

So becoming aware of its history and effect on the human races is bound to be a curious eye-opener. For me it was a relaxing diversion from my deeper reading.

One reason I choose a book of this topic is from reading other history books mentioning how Christianity was influential in establishing the glass trade "craftsmen with great technical skill.... particularly in churches" stained-glass windows, glass candle-holders and rosary beads, which in turn gave rise to science. Glass was a religious commodity making readily available glass for needed lenses for microscope, telescopes, Newton's prism, along with glass test tubes and bottles used in science and even for "spectacles" so people could better read and study.

While reading this book I found the following quotes from the book might be things not enough people today "see" though is mentioned in numerous detailed history books.

"the expansion of Christianity, which was...sympathetic to the study of God's law encouraged experimentation and the harnessing of new knowledge." "It is rather noticeable that all the greatest medieval scientists were churchmen." having "the curiosity and desire to understand God's laws." (Isaac Newton was another one in this category.)

"England benefited from the influx of skilled refugees" (Huguenots - French Protestants) including John Dolland who "established the optical industry in the United Provinces. (History records the economic downturn of France when the highly religious and educated Huguenots left in 1685 at the revoking of the "Edict of Nantes" now banning Protestants. This was to the great advantage of the nations they fled to.)

Lastly these authors (as many authors sourcing historic writings) make historical references from an abundance of written records of the religious Jesuits and Missionaries, in many cases the only recorders of history, peoples, their customs and lifestyles ever to be found.

.....Just for some curious side-thoughts.

The book is easy to understand and certainly offers a different perspective of what we all too soon take for granted; Glass.

The Reign of the Age of Glass
By GlassMind
GLASS: A WORLD HISTORY, Macfarlane and Martin, University of Chicago Press, 2002

What a magnificent book! What an amazing thesis! Here, artfully and clearly presented by the authors, is the idea that this taken for granted miracle substance, all around us in the current day - in the form of drinking glasses, jars and bowls, eyeglasses, mirrors, TV screens, computer monitors, camera and telescope and microscope lenses, windows, petri dishes and test tubes - is the chief driver of modernity.

Yes, from its tribal discovery and development in Mesopotamia some 4,500 years ago, this translucent, moldable, durable, and highly refractive substance has transformed our world. Its reach and versatility has penetrated and enhanced all areas of our life - just think about the light bulb, and how humans now can read and write and play and do oh so many things without serious regard to dark fall.

Nor does it stop with lighting. Just think about transportation (car, train, plane windows) or shelter (windows for houses and buildings). Think about optics. Think about how optics, in itself, has led to biological science and medicine (where would Louis Pasteur, and all those who came after him, be without the microscope?). Think about how optics allows people (like me!) with aging eyes to read, and for others, all manner of other optical correction (I know, I know, you'll say, today these lenses are plastic, but were it not for glass, the field of optics - involving an understanding of curvature, refraction, lens making, etc. - plastic lenses would have been much much later in the making.)

Indeed, the computer upon which I type this review would not have been possible without glass. The early transistors, later integrated circuits, computer processing, monitors, the trunk lines today through which information passes, all dependant on silica based "life forms" Indeed, silica, the essential ingredient of glass (glass is SiO2 - silicon dioxide), and its various compounds, is in everything electronic, in one form or another. And it is frankly and explicitly in the glass fiber used in high speed digital processing. Our information age would not be if not for glass. Glass magically and durably allows for the transmission of light, for the tallying of its photonic particles, and their reinterpretation into meaningful bits of information known as words or as images on the myriad screens that proliferate today in this, the Information Age.

The Information Age is the Glass Age, and this is the book that gets you thinking about that, about the sweeping impact of glass on our world. And of course we are still evolving, culturally, and technologically, at break-neck speed, and glass continues to be a fundamental part of this evolution.

This book is a must read for any thinking, curious person. It should be high on the list for those interested in the history or philosophy of science, the nature of technology, information processing, and cultural evolution. It should be of interest for anyone interested in craft and the relationship of creativity and technology. It should be of interest for anyone enthralled by the beauty of glass, entranced by its colors, and the way light plays in and through it. Artists and technologists alike can take de-light in what Alan Macfarlane and Gerry Martin have to say.

There was a Bronze Age, and then an Iron Age, but now, if one thinks a bit on the material presented in this seminal work, the Age of Glass spans nearly this whole time period as well. Yet, unlike bronze and iron, the importance of glass and other silica based compounds continues along, at the cutting edge, in fact, of our cultural and technological unfolding.

Disclaimer: The writer of this review, Harlan Simon of harlanglass.com, is an avowed and self-confessed glass-evangelist (bet you couldn't tell!). He is an amateur glass historian, and a professional jewelry designer, glassmaker, and teacher. He offers ongoing glassmaking workshops at the City of Oakland's public art studio, Studio One, which is Northern California's longest continuously running public flamework glass program. On the Web, there are numerous YouTube and Expertillage.com how-to videos depicting Harlan teaching various glass beadmaking techniques of the ancient art known as flamework. And during the summer, Harlan teaches several retreat-type glass beadmaking workshops at Feather River Art Camp near Quincy CA and at the beautiful Mendocino Art Center on the rugged Northern California coast.

Harlan passionately shares the view of the authors of Glass: A World History (indeed learning much of it from them) of the transformative nature of glass. And he is working (slowly!) on a further development of their thesis of the pivotal, epoch-making nature of glass. Indeed, expanding upon the line of thought brought forth by Macfarlane and Martin, of the influence of glass on western art and science (realistic portrayal of a 3-D world in 2-D, the empiricism of the scientific method, etc.), Harlan is of the further view that perhaps even the concept of the "self," both in the realm of psychology as well as in modern political theory (Locke, Rousseau, French Revolution, Rights of Man, and the founding of American Democracy), can also be traced to the impact of Glass. There is a speculative idea here as well, which relates to light and mind, energy and thought, and involves questions about what the "big picture" purpose of glass is. Harlan's work concludes with some tentative answers as to what the Reign of the Age of Glass might be about and what it ultimately means for us.

It was not at all what I expected. I ...
By Stephen M Smith
It was not at all what I expected. I expected to read about a chronicle of scientific and technological advances related to the use of glass and instead I got, as promised, a world history through the lens(pun intended...also a common ploy of the authors) of glass. Very interesting and informative as it helped me see the world, particularly Eastern cultures, in a new light

“While this insight into the backstory of Diablo III is very welcome, at least half the draw of the Book of Cain was in its gorgeous illustrations, the sort of images you only find in concept artwork, except more fully fleshed out and featuring a greater degree of detail. Great Content BAD Printing!
By Cybrwolf
Today, I have received, and fully read (about 6 hours) the entirety of the Book of Tyrael.

The authors of this book (Matt Burns and Doug Alexander) had quite the task of matching the wonderful writing of Book of Cain (Flint Dille). I am happy to say that they were up to the challenge, and the writing of this book, is every bit as good as what was put forth, by Flint Dille.

As a complete Diablo lore nerd, I cannot begin to describe my anticipation for this particular lore book. I will most assuredly be re-reading this, many more times, before the release of, Reaper of Souls. I am left both satiated, and still wanting more!

If you are looking for more Diablo content, this is what you "should" buy! (Note the word "should!")

For now my friends, is where It breaks my heart, to talk about the flaws of this potentially wonderful book, the printing.

The Book of Cain, was designed and printed with wonderfully detailed artwork, great pagination, smart use of switching between printed and hand-written text. At no time was the TEXT ever unreadable!

Most of this book is suppose to look like Book of Cain pages glued to modern pages.
While I can surely appreciate the artistic intent, the coloring of these pages, is just too dark.

The black text on DARKLY colored backgrounds makes several words in the book unreadable!!!

Far too many of pages are only readable if you have a direct light beaming down onto the book.

For those of you who think I am probably just going blind, let me assure you that I do wear either glasses, or contacts, and have my vision checked yearly. This is not a case of eyesight.

The sections of the book, that do not exhibit this problem are Tyrael's own pages, these are black text, on a greyish background, and are quite pleasant to read.

However, since MOST of this book's content is meant to come from other notes and journals, kept by Deckard Cain, this means that a lot of content is difficult to actually read!

Not all of these "historical" pages are unreadable, in fact the inconsistency, in which each page is readable is absurd. I truly do not know if this was the result of a flaw in the printing process, or overuse of artist intent.

I WANT to recommend this to every Diablo nut out there, but I can't.

The content is so worth paying for, but just not in this format.

Buy it, if you must, but be prepared to read this in the noon-day sun, or with a flashlight.

Angelic!
By Sara Moreland
The book contains beautiful illustrations on quality paper lined with "gold," giving you the feel that this was truly put together by a former angel. The only complaint I have is that we do not hear much from Tyrael. The book seems to be mostly a collection of the studies of Cain and Leah that Tyrael is "publishing" posthumously. However, this does not subtract from the quality of the book or the lore it presents (history, organizations, speculations, important figures in the history of Sanctuary). Like the map contained in the Book of Cain, the Book of Tyrael also has a "hidden treat" in the back of the book - a family tree relating to Tristam and King Leoric. I would recommend this book to any Diablo fan.

Great book!

Diablo III: Book of Tyrael

Unfortunately I some how added two to my cart and since my cart was such a big amount of items I didn't even notice. This really sucks but happens. This book is great and plays well with the game. This was a birthday gift to my husband who loves that it comes with so many extras and it's hard cover. My husband gets compliments on the book all of the time as it looks like a really cool book when it's standing in with other books. The pictures inside are beautiful. There is an envelope in the back with a family tree on both sides that is exquisite. This is just a great book that he would recommend to anyone and everyone.

light and music didn't work
By K.
This is a cute book for the a toddler (my 16 month old son LOVES these books), but this book is not the winner Halloween Bugs is (I highly recommend-- plus, bugs fit in better for that season). But this book is fun and cute nonetheless. Problem is, the one light in the whole book, along with the music, is the last page, and neither work! The light doesn't light up at all, and the music is this pathetic dying noise. I'd exchange it, but don't think I want to mess with shipping it back. I'd say buy this book if you think your little will enjoy it, but don't be too disappointed if the last page doesn't work.

UPDATE: I have since returned this book for a new one, and the new book is working great. Both my 16 month old and 3 yr old love it. The only problem is how my 16 month old isn't gentle with these books, but it is worth the price, even if I have to replace it one day.

This is your warning...
By The Mrs
that once you buy one of these books, you'll end up with the entire collection. Children love these pop-up books because they are like no other books out there. The pages are beautiful and sturdy, while being incredibly interactive. We have so much fun reading this book. This series puts all other pop-up books to shame. The rest are the boring "lift-a-flap" for every page. Tons of fun and surprises are in store for the little hands that turn these pages!

Cute and Creative Christmas Book
By bethlovesbooks
My 18-month old daughter loves this book. The interactive elements are inventive and thoughtful. I also appreciate the quality of the rhyming text (sometimes the pop ups are cute, but the text is a mere boring afterthought), and there are a variety of different types of activities. Sometimes things pop up, other times there is a lift the flap. There is a bug ornament that you take out of the envelope and hang on the tree (which she loves to do again and again...I get so tired of that page!)
If you are looking for a Christmas book that is interactive and a little bit different, this fits the bill.
My only complaint is that the battery for the star on the last page has worn out, and it's not replacable! They should make it replacable like with so many other battery powered books.

Hollow Earth, by Raymond Bernard

1964 Dr. Bernard says this is the true home of the flying saucers. The epoch-making significance of Adm. Byrd s flight for 1,700 miles into the North Polar opening leading to the hollow interior of the earth, the home of a Super Race who are the Creators of the flying saucers will startle the world. The author claims that this remarkable book proves that there exists on the inside of the earth s crust, which is about 800 miles thick, a New World, and that Admiral Byrds polar expeditions penetrated a total distance of 4,000 miles into this Land Beyond the North and South Poles, where there exist immense openings leading to the subterranean world in the hollow interior of the earth, home of a super race and super civilization.

Fascinating and Wonderful
By Fitzherbert Farnsworth
I recommend this book highly. I initially heard about the idea of the hollow Earth from a passage in Dr. Joshua Stone's books. Dr Bernard gives much evidence to prove his premise. In the beginning, there is some repetition, but stay with it, because you will be well-rewarded.
I don't find this hard to believe because I realize there are countless occasions throughout history wherein we have come to discover that what we had been told was the truth, was in fact not. Well, this is the case with the Hollow Earth. In fact, if you have ever read David Icke, you will know just how much of our agreed-upon "reality" is simply not what it seems.
The Earth is hollow with a central inner sun,as are probably all planets , and has openings at both "poles". The pole in itself is questionable as there are no objects as such , instead huge 1000-mile wide concave openings. Explorers who claim to have reached the poles have in fact only reached the rim of these openings.
There is a warm land beyond the farthest northern reaches - the inner Earth. Animals have been noted to migrate northward towards this region instead of going south. Blocks of ice which have been found containing animals such as Wooly Mammoths intact with fresh grass in their stomachs were once thought to be prehistoric animals. No. They still exist in the Hollow Earth and find their way from the inner rivers out to the openings while grazing and get frozen by the colder temperatures at the rim.

The book refers to Navy Admiral Richard Byrd who flew into the Hollow Earth and witnessed a wonderful land of greenery, animals, lakes , a central sun and a continually temperate climate.

The Inner Earth is often called "Agharta" and is peopled with peaceful and loving beings far advanced beyond us. Comparatively we are still barbarians.

The legends of all civilizations contain references to this land. In Norse myths, it is called "Valhalla", in Tibetan tales, it is called "Shangri-La"...the Greeks called it "Mount Olympus" and the "Elysian Fields", the Celts called it "Dananda" and so on...
When Atlantis was destroyed the Atlanteans escaped to the inner Earth through the massive tunnel system which crisscrosses the Earth and extends under the oceans. Many openings are found in the mountains of Brazil.
The famous case of Colonel Fawcett and his son Jack who went missing in the 19th c. in Brazil is suggested to have been because they entered the Inner Earth and remained by choice. Who can blame them ?!

The beings of Agharta may be the descendants of the Atlanteans, the Lemurians and the Hyporboreans.

Another interesting argument the author makes is that the origins of UFOs comes from inside the Earth. He is convincing in this.

This book is full of fascinating ideas and whether you are convinced or not, reading it will be well worth your time.
Cheers!

An Absolute Must Read!
By Elden
Now we know why no one talks about this, and everyone thinks the Earth is solid and the North and South Poles are where they said they are! Right, read this book and find out something so interesting it is no wonder the discovery of Admiral Richard E. Byrd's discovery was hushed up. But, the reality is the truth will always come out and this is one of those books. Do yourself a favor and get a copy as fast as you can before it is no longer available and read it.

A TOUGH SELL; yet very compelling!
By gnosisguy
Hardcover BELL edition 1979:
Well, where does one begin? I mean this stuff is fascinating and paradigm changing, but does it stand up to critical analysis and scientific scrutiny?
Perhaps those questions are best answered by each individual reader? I myself was driven to purchase this book as part of an ongoing investigation to the validity of any of this admittedly "Far-Out" conjecture, which was precipitated by the recurring storyline of strange reports and odd interviews by that great American pole explorer Admiral Richard E. Byrd. (during the early and middle part of the 20th century).
Here once again ones finds a 'rabbit-hole' of no return; one that may or may not lead one down to this legendary inner-space within our terrestrial sphere?

First-off we find that this book was originally published in 1964, and is considered (by some) a 'cult classic' among UFO aficionados, etc. Perhaps this is because from the books 'forward', to page one of the very first chapter Titled, "UFOs AND GOVERNMENT SECRECY", the author addresses (appropriately enough) UFOs and governmental cover-ups! Hmm, wait a minute; there just might be another agenda going on here? And just who is Dr. Raymond Bernard, A.B., M.A., Ph.D. anyway? Oddly we find (thanks to Wikipedia) that this was a pseudonym for one Walter Siegmeister (1901-1965). A Russian Jew born in New York city whose father was a bio-chemist student in Germany, and according to same source, Siegmeister graduated from Columbia University and took his P.h.D. in education in 1932, etc., etc. So it would appear that his 'bona fides' are at a casual glance, legit. He is thusly described as such; "Was an early 20th century American alternative health, esoteric writer, author [with four other titles to his name], and mystic, who formed part of the alternative reality subculture." Wow that says quite a bit about the guy, but what about the book, and why does one go to all this trouble and quite coincidentally publish just one year before his demise?
This book is nothing if not compelling to some degree; The author asks a ton of reasonable 'fact based' questions based on "real" reports as chronicled by just about every explorer that ever tried to reach either the North or South pole. And from what I can surmise there are a number of odd facts that just do not add-up upon close scrutiny.
Does this mean that the Earth is indeed a semi-hollow sphere, with an inner sun and a civilization of "antediluvians" with flying saucers living inside? It is to say the least a huge stretch of ones credulity, and I would say that modern science does not support it in the extreme. And yet there must be room for some middle-ground; a place where we can concede that perhaps we do not know everything we think we know. Much of Admiral Byrd's exploits have been marginalized to a certain degree by sensationalists, where his deeds and words have now entered the realm of modern mythos. That's a shame, as I believe there is something to his strange reports and press interviews; something our government would like to keep a lid on, and as a matter of fact, have effectively done so.

Just recently there were press reports of scientific findings of vast amount of water either under the crust or between the crust and mantle (oceans?); who knew? Yet we've all heard of "The Waters of the Deep" right? And oddly as well as timely; just a few days ago I heard (on a radio talk show) a modern researcher of "the hollow Earth theory," explain that real-time satellite images of either pole are impossible to come by and that you can forget about Google Earth as those images are made up of composites and always appear to be under the cover of clouds. Try this yourself and see, I did.

I find it hard to believe that there are 1400 mile orifices at each pole (which would be difficult to pull off at the North pole as it is known to be covered by the Artic ocean); and yet even this 'unbelievable' reality is logically explained by the author, (you have to read the book). What I do believe is that there is a lot more to this story than meets the eye; there are anomalies not easily explained, and that somewhere between fact and fantasy, we will find the truth.

Bottom line; it's a good read, weird but good. If nothing else it will make you think.

Practical Signal Processing, by Mark Owen

The principles of signal processing are fundamental to the operation of many everyday devices. This book introduces the basic theory of digital signal processing, with emphasis on real-world applications. Sampling, quantization, the Fourier transform, filters, Bayesian methods and numerical considerations are covered, then developed to illustrate how they are used in audio, image, and video processing and compression, and in communications. The book concludes with methods for the efficient implementation of algorithms in hardware and software. Intuitive arguments rather than mathematical ones are used wherever possible, and links between various signal processing techniques are stressed. The advantages and disadvantages of different approaches are presented in the context of real-world examples, enabling the reader to choose the best solution to a given problem. With over 200 illustrations and over 130 exercises (including solutions), this book will appeal to practitioners working in signal processing, and undergraduate students of electrical and computer engineering.

Great DSP book for beginners
By calBear
This is a great book that has both the basic theory and practical applications. It is great for someone wants to learn the basics and apply to different field. Also, it is easy to read, I read most of this book in coffee shops, no heavy math, just high level overviews.

The first part of the book is on theory, it contains: introduction to signal, sampling, conversion between analogue and digital, Fourier transform, filters, and likelihood method. The style of the book is very friendly, easy to understand, and have lots of figures to illustrate the concept. From these theories, you can easily understand what is sampling bias, the method to deal with irregular sampling, what's the physical meaning of FFT, different type of filters etc.

The best part of this book is the second half which shows you different applications to audio, images, videos, and communications. I found this is really interesting and useful, since you soon grab the essence of the concept you just learned from the first part, and know how they actually used in the real world. I am a student in seismology, so I also spend a lot of time dealing with seismic signals. The applications shown in this book actually inspired me to try some of the method/techniques used in other field to seismology.

I think this book is great for getting the high level overviews of the key techniques in DSP. As other reviewers said, it is not a complete book about DSP. If you want to learn more, after this book, you can choose some of the classics, e.g. Understanding Digital Signal Processing by Richard G. Lyons.

Mechanical Vibrations and Shocks: Sinusoidal Vibrations v. 1 (Mechanical Vibration & Shock), by Christi Lalanne

This volume is from the "Mechanical Vibration and Shock" five-volume study. The relative and absolute response of a mechanical system to one degree with freedom is considered for arbitrary excitation, and its transfer function defined in various forms. The characteristics of sinusoidal vibration are placed in the context both of the real world and of laboratory tests, and transient and steady state response of the single-degree-of-freedom system. First viscous damping and then non-linear damping is considered. The various types of sine-sweep and their properties are described and, for the one-degree-of-freedom system, the consequences of an inappropriate choice of sweep rate are considered. From the latter, rules governing the choice of suitable sweep rates are developed.

Horrible
By Picky User
This is an earlier book and I understand that societal norms have changed a lot, but this book really was horrible. Basically, here's what happens in the book:

A long time ago, Annie was the golden child of the entertainment industry. She goes to a party at Adamas' house where she drinks and gets almost raped by his brother-in-law. Thanks to the tabloids and Adamas' selfish and disgusting family, Annie is flayed alive by the press. Result: she changes her image from golden girl to seductress.

Fast forward several years and she and her half-brother Todd are just embarking on a new modeling contract for Annie when she is literally kidnapped by Adamas and taken to his private island where he rapes her. His reason? Because he's been lusting after her. Also, because his cousin, who is also a model, was dating Todd until she couldn't get over her jealousy over Annie and Todd dumped her. Anyway, Annie is stuck on the island, attracted to Adamas and the two continue to have sex, while Adamas is trying to take Annie off her new modeling contract so that he can give it to his worthless cousin instead.

Ending: the two end up living happily ever after after Adamas confesses his love to Annie, but not until after he's taken the lucrative modeling contract away from Annie and given it to his cousin.

Now, I don't have much problems with forced seduction tales and quite frankly, all Harlequin romances involve the forced seduction. However, this one really was rape and Adamas is just so very unlikeable. There is nothing rational about him, he made a stupid promise to his cousin and instead of stopping his revenge against Annie afer he realized he was wrong about her, he continued to keep her prisoner on his island until she succumbed to his "request" to remove herself from her modeling contract. Which she never did. Instead, that was also forciblly taken from her. He forces her to marry him, she sees the candid wedding photos and realizes that he loves her and she loves him back. Stupid story about a stupid girl with no backbone and ruthless man who gets whatever he wants without taking into account any one else's considerations.

As for Todd, the half-brother, he's the only character that I did like. I understand that he actually did like the worthless cousin and Annie made a sacrifice by not telling him the truth about her, but again, Annie is stupid so I don't think she should be allowed to make any decisions. After all, deciding to marry an insecure scheming b---- after knowing all the facts because you really love her is a decision that he should be allowed to make after getting all the facts. She and her family are all ruthless. Being a part of it doesn't guarantee protection for yourself--a fact that stupid Annie would have realized if she had any brains.

The morning after
By texas reader
Worst book I have ever read. This book was horrible. I give it negative stars. Not only does the premise of the book not make sense, the actions of the characters don't work. Annie sleeps with this guy, finds out what a horrible person he really is, and then gives up the modelling contract? Adamas has a hidden agenda throughout the entire book and if he really loves annie so much, why is he trying to push his cousins agenda? It doesn't make sense. I actually read this book on my kindle and came to the amazon website to write my first review ever because I was SOOOOO disappointed. Truly the worst book I have ever read. I cannot adequately describe my disappointment...

Good, but not great
By She Buys Stuff
From the back: Cesar DeSanquez was right about Annie's beauty: it has made her into an international supermodel. But the only life about to be ruined was Annie's - by Cesar! In reality, she was a shy virgin, but Cesar preferred to believe in her glossy image. He passionately believed that she had torn apart his family in the space of a night. And now, in the cold light of dawn, he wanted his revenge!
This is probably one of my least favorite Reids. Ultimately, I just couldn't help wishing that Annie had found a better guy, which doesn't bode well for the story. Nonetheless, it had the same passion and intensity that I have come to love from all Reid novels.
