Rich, rich writing!

What an amazing written Nottage is! I had only seen a staged reading of her play "Ruined" and couldn't wait to read more of her work. "Crumbs from the Table of Joy" brings together two unlikely worlds in 1950 and shows us sometimes in a raw way, sometimes with intelligent nuance and detail, how we are, after all, all part of one race: the Human race.

Lynn Nottage's work is a crucial contribution to American literature. She writes her plays with an intricacy, like a seamstress meticulously reweaving and tailoring an old wool suit for a new body. Referances to African American women playwrights who came before her, ie. Lorrainne Hansberry, Alice Childress, Adrienne Kennedy--are too easy. I think what Arthur Miller did for American theater, returning us to our backyards and digging up the soil to expose the roots, can easily be said of Nottage.

Rick Stein, British TV seafood cooking instructor and seafood restaurant owner, wasn't able to get every recipe he loves into his first book, Taste of the Sea. So he wrote Fruits of the Sea.

Where Taste of the Sea was a kind of introduction to seafood cooking for those a bit hesitant about trying different kinds of fish, Fruits of the Sea is more like Stein's launching pad. He assumes he is preaching to an enthusiastic choir. Much of his information is right to the point, and his style of instruction is more refined. All the techniques for prepping different kinds of fish are described in clear language as well as illustrated in detailed photos. Included, too, is a discussion of many of the unusual ingredients Stein pulls into his recipes for that extra dash of brilliant flavor--preserved lemons, for example, or kaffir lime leaves.

It comes as little surprise, then, that Stein opens with recipes like Basque Squid Stew, Moroccan Fish Tagine, Seafood in a Crab and Ginger Broth, and Mussels with Turmeric, Cumin, and Coriander.

He breaks his recipes into soup, stews, and clear broths; light lunch dishes; hot and spicy fish; deep-fried fish; summer fish and salads; fish from colder climates; elegant fish dishes; quick and simple fish; hand-held and party food; and food to finish with. As in the first book, you'll also find basic stocks and sauces and a list of alternative fish for the American and Australian markets. About the Author
Rick Stein is a well-loved and respected chef, TV presenter and author who has produced an array of award-winning books and television series, including Rick Stein's Seafood, Seafood Lover's Guide, Taste of the Sea, Food Heroes, French Odyssey, Mediterranean Escapes, Coast to Coast and Far Eastern Odyssey. All of his books and programmes show a commitment to good-quality produce, sustainable fishing and good husbandry. Rick owns four restaurants, a delicatessen, a patisserie, a seafood cookery school and forty guest bedrooms in the small fishing port of Padstow, Cornwall. In 2003, Rick was awarded an OBE for services to West Country Tourism. He divides his time between Padstow and Australia, which he regards as his second home.

Simply smashing!!!

My sister in law was visiting from England and referred us to this chef. This is an excellent book. The photos are perfect and the recipes are outstanding! My wife made the salmon in pastry and it was like a 5 star restaurant entree. Our guests were amazed and even we were impressed with the presentation and results. Easy to follow instructions and information make this book delightful to read and fun to explore. Well done all around!

Oh that Rick Stein !

Rick Stein and his 'Taste of the Sea' series ran on PBS (or at least on KQED, SF) a few years back, and we miss his slightly off-center humor and antics -- but especially his on-location recipes, often prepared with the characters who provided them to him. In addition to fun memories of the series, these recipes will give you many delicious meals to savor. A good read, and a very good cook book.

This volume was another great edition to the Otomen Series and I am looking forward to seeing what happens next. In this volume Asuka's mother starts to interfere more with the lives of all his close friends, I hope that everything works out for them and that they can find a way to overcome the problems she is creating for them.

This series is drawing to a close soon, along with several other Shojo Beat titles, surprisingly. Several of them didn’t feel like the end was near, but I definitely don’t mind. This series does need a conclusion soon, and I’m looking forward to the main plots being concluded, but I still wasn’t really expecting it.

Asuka’s mom is, like, psychotic, you guys. She feels so strongly against boys doing girly things, it’s ridiculous. And now she’s watching her son closely, wanting to sabotage him. She needs to knock it off, get some sense put into her. I’m looking forward to that confrontation.

Aside from that, there was the rest of the Yamato plot line, then one where the group stars in an ad-lib play. Something big happens with Juta at the end, and that should cause some problems.

I think the shining star in this story is Asuka and Ryo’s relationship. They’re just so sweet and cute together, so secure in their relationships and mature about it. I enjoy relationship drama, but this is very nice to see as well. And I’m honestly starting to wonder if those two are ever going to kiss, or do anything overtly romantic. Hopefully something will happen by the end of the series, since there are only two books left.

This isn’t a series that really sticks out, it’s not high in drama or dark material or anything. It’s very lighthearted and sweet. But that’s nice, too, going into it expecting light and fluffy, drama over little things that get fixed easily, a very sweet read. I’m enjoying it.

Cyborg Spell Shop: A Harkon Colony Short Story

I love my fantasy and magic but not too bothered about sci fi so why did I buy this - I was looking for something short and punchy for a train journey. The title made absolutely no sense but I was in a rush. Well I am so glad I got this book, (I shall have to rush my purchases more often!) It is a great short story, the characters are great and the story is wacky enough to be engaging. I must admit I was ready to slam this book and leave a crap review but I found myself getting drawn in by the story and the characters to the point where I wanted it to last a lot longer.

In short this is a great book that is well written. I am looking forward to getting more by this author :-)

Hilarious and entertaining short story! Short ribs, please.

This is an exceedingly amusing little short story about a technosage who uses technology to convince people he knows magic. Of course, the tables get turned on him when someone demands the only spell he can't give: Love. Our hero then finds himself on the other side of his own style of "magic," and has to use his wits to scramble out. It all works out in the end in an amusing and thoroughly satisfying manner. It feels in some ways like a zany and hilarious '80s movie. I'm a big fan of author James Chalk!

A Great Textbook!

My daughter and I love working with this geometry textbook for homeschool. Like all the Saxon math texts, it does an excellent job of ensuring mastery of all topics. It also includes lots of Algebra review in each lesson so that those skills aren't forgotten while we do geometry. We recommend getting the Solutions manual as well - there are lots of higher level questions and it's nice to compare our thoughts with the experts.

Finally the Saxon Math sequence is complete

For years a succession of Saxon publishers has honored the view of series creator John Saxon that (1) Geometry should not be a separate course, but instead, middle and high school students should be exposed to Geometry in bits and pieces across several years of their math studies, and (2) that the traditional core of classical Geometry, Euclidian logic and specifically "two column proofs," are unimportant. (Yes, there is a lesson on proofs in the Saxon Algebra 2 text, but if you blinked, you missed it.)

For just as many years, teachers have bought a Geometry text from another source (Jacobs in our case), depriving the Saxon publisher of a business opportunity and interrupting the instructional flow of students raised on Saxon. At last, the Saxon publisher du jour, Harcourt, has introduced this new text. It is excellent. It presents all of the traditional content, and presents it well, preserving the Saxon method of presentation, nightly problem sets, and continuous cumulative review.

John Saxon is turning over in his grave, but the students he has indoctrinated in a 13-year sequence of consistent instruction and practice no longer have to take a year off.

Saxon always delivers

This is my eleventh year home schooling, and we've used Saxon math for six of those years. I wish I'd used them from the beginning. Saxon's approach is very methodical. Baby steps to learn new material, while constantly reviewing previously learned concepts. Lots of word problems and deciphering what they're asking you to figure out, which helps when kids get to high school and things like chemistry and physics. Two of my kids absolutely love the Saxon approach and do their work willingly. One of them hates the constant review, complains that it takes too long to do a lesson, won't ask for help when she gets stumped, and just generally dislikes the whole program. I make her do it anyway, because she's learning in spite of herself. The Saxon Teacher cds are an excellent companion to the textbook, especially if you are less than confident about teaching math to your kids.

Bent my funny bone

I rarely spend money on a book from an author I have never read unless it is recommended by someone I trust. This time I did, and now I am sucked into the start of a new series. Ten to fiftten percent in, I was laughing out loud and snorting. Seriously, I was. I refuse to give the plot away except Bent is about three lifelong friends, all intelligent, witty, loveable, horndogs, their business, a waitress, a cousin, and a sister. This is primarily the tale of Alex, who while pursuing his manslut ways, suffers a much hilarious injury to an extremely sensitive portion of his anatomy. Rated R for adult (but not excessive content) and riotous laughter. Can hardly wait for the next book.

What a perfect light comedy

Wowzers! What a perfect light comedy! I love a book from a man's perspective and Timmins gives it with hilarity, sweetness, and vulnerability. I'm not gonna lie, I can't decide on which is my bbf. I'm going to have to read all their stories to decide. I highly recommend if you're looking for a relaxing romantic read, with a good chuckle.

Absolutely adore this book!

Absolutely adore this book! Congratulations S. H. Timmins on this fantastic debut novel. I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I started... maybe the usual contemporary romance, but almost immediately I was laughing so hard I was crying. This story is told completely in our H's POV, which is a bit unusual for me and I just loved being inside that man's head. He was so funny. Alex and his friends are three of the most interesting guys I've read about in a while and I can't wait for the next book. Not only hilarious, this story is beyond sweet! For all of their big heads, Alex and his friends are great guys. And for the romance... Alex and Shay's relationship had me smiling. Shay is a strong female character that kept Alex on his toes without being a b****. She liked him too, and didn't have a problem admitting it. Overall, I'd say this story was more than worth the time and money. Great job S. H. Timmins! I impatiently await the next!
